Have you ever tried explaining the concept of time to your preschooler? You will find that the concept is not easily understood by your child. This concept is not easy to grasp for a young three year old. Your child?s preschool will teach your child the name of the months and days of the week, but what can you do to hasten the process. Time is a complex concept for children, it isn?t something that they can touch, feel or explore. Without being able to tangibly feel children need the help of adults to explain the complex concept of time.
One way of teaching the concept is by singing. Children love singing, so songs associated with the days of the week, will make it clear to the toddler the concept of Monday to Saturday. They will clearly understand that Monday is the day Grandma visits us and Tuesday is the day we go to the park and so on.
Here a few simple ideas that you can try at home to teach your child the concept of time. Buy a calendar for your child to keep in his room. Use special markers to mark birthdays and special events. Teach your child to mark each special day with an X or a a tick mark to remember special days.
When talking to your child, use words like yesterday, today and tomorrow, to indicate time. These concepts are not easy to your child, you have to instil these in your child?s mind. When you use words like yesterday, today and tomorrow, in conjunction with a calendar the concept of time become more tangible and concrete for your child and easier to understand. Talking with your child in concepts of time, such as, ?we go to the park on Wednesdays.? And then marking it on the calendar will make the concept clearer and teach your child to associate concepts with days and months.
Buy books that highlight the concept of time and read out the book to your child. After a few readings of the book, your child will grasp the concept of days of the week. For more difficult concept like next year, this is too long a time for your child to wait, use concepts like when you turn three or when your cousins visit us. This will gradually instil the concept of months and year also in your child?s mind.
For special days like birthdays and holidays, make a visual and interactive chain to help the time pass more quickly. Cut a paper into 1??x 6??strips and help your child make a chain. Stick each end with glue and help create a circle. This will make the concept of week clear to the child. Make the big special day like birthday or holiday bright with glitters so that it is clearer and hang it in a prominent place in your child?s room. By making concentrated efforts to explain the concept of time to your child, you will succeed in explaining the complex concept of time to your child and you will very soon find that your child is able to link days of the week to events.
