National Briefing | West: California: Poisonous Mushroom Soup Kills Another

A fourth person has died from eating a soup made with poisonous wild mushrooms this month at a senior care facility in Northern California, the authorities said Tuesday. The victim?s identity was not released. Three other people at the six-bed Gold Age Villa in Loomis died from eating the mushrooms in what Placer County sheriff?s investigators have characterized as an accident. All of the victims were sickened on Nov. 8, including the caretaker who made the soup.

The Family Tree

?Steve, please get the Christmas decorations out of the attic. Now.?

The response from the recliner in the other room was very unChristmas-like.

?Bah humbug,? a man?s voice growled.

It was the annual battle of their marriage. ?Judy Gibson loved decorating for Christmas. Her husband loved watching football.

?Why are we putting up a tree anyway? The kids are gone. They live out of state. ?We?re flying out to see them this year.? ?Steve knew the answer, but picked at his wife anyway.

Judy quietly shook her head. ?Married to Steve for nearly 40 years, she closed her eyes and remembered their wedding. The base chapel had been decorated for Advent. ?She could still smell the fresh-cut cedar branches and see the burning candles. ?And there was Steve, standing proudly at the alter in his Naval uniform, weighing maybe 160 lbs. ? Steve was like a tree now; you could cut him in half and count forty rings from where he had put on weight over the years. Judy remembered their honeymoon at Biltmore House in Asheville. The Vanderbilt?s mansion was so beautifully decorated for the holidays. Being a young girl from Mississippi, she had never seen a house that big. ?Something about the mountains, the trees and the Christmas ornaments touched her heart. When she saw the banquet room and its big tree, she vowed they would always have a great tree, too.

Father Noel?s Tree Farm had provided their one. ?Steve struggled to strap it to the top of their Chevrolet Impala wagon. ?She remembered it looking like a walking tree as he hauled it into their one-bedroom base apartment. ?They were so poor that the only ornaments they owned ?were ribbon ornaments made from a red and white checkered table cloth. ?Hot lights and reflectors illuminated the dry tree. It was a miracle they didn?t burn base housing down.

It was 1972. ?And since there was little Peace on Earth and goodwill to men, Steve had been overseas for most of the year. ?That fall, he brought back ornaments from all his ports of call. ?And then they took a trip to Hawaii. That December, their new tree had five new ornaments joining the ribbons. ?Her favorite was the palm tree with the lady with the ukelele. She could almost hear Don Ho singing ?Tiny Bubbles? when she saw it at the tacky little souvenir shop.

The next Christmas Steve and Judy had a new member of the family. ?Frances May Gibson was born nine months after their trip to Hawaii and the new tree had a new ornament as well. It was a wooden stork with the time, date and weight of the new baby. ?The next two trees found two more storks joining Frances May?s. ?Steve Jr. and Albert Frances were now part of ?the young family.

Steve was promoted to a command position on the U.S.S. Enterprise and soon a small aircraft carrier ornament joined the storks and the ribbons. ?Judy diligently saved up Green Stamps and got a set of beautiful gold glass ball ornaments. Those were bought when they lived in Norfolk, Virginia. ?There was a Norfolk ornament, too. ?Every town they lived in would have its own ornament. Like in their heart, it would have a special place in their tree.

The next year, Frances May came home with a special ornament made in preschool. ?It was made from a margarine lid, red construction paper and a photo of her ponytailed, tooth-missing freckled face. ?Each kid would come home with similar ornaments over the years. And each would have its own place on the tree.

The next summer found the Gibsons headed to Disney World. ?Most folks would have pitied the couple hauling the three kids around the Magic Kingdom. But Judy and Steve were having as much fun as the kids. ?Judy saved up her spare change and bought a beautiful globe with Cinderella?s castle on it. ?Mickey himself would have been proud of the place of honor given to the ornament.

In the mid-1980?s Steve came home from a cruise with a big box. ??I saw this and had to get it for you.? ?Judy unwrapped the golden paper and saw the most beautiful angel she had ever seen. ?I thought she looked like you,? Steve grinned. He climbed up the stepladder and proudly placed it on the top of the tree.

Steve and Judy had a little cat named Nixon when they were married. ?Nixon had his ornament. ?Nixon was soon joined by a terrier-mix named Snowflake. ?She had her own ornament, too. Nixon tragically was hit by a Captain?s car on a rainy November night. ?Snowflake died of old age and soon a small puppy named Lady Bird joined the family. The pets were well represented with ornaments. So were all the trips Steve and Judy took around the world. Barcelona, Paris, New York, Washington D.C., London all hung on their family. Steve liked the little Eiffel Tower the best. ? It reminded him of holding hands with Judy during strolls down the busy Paris streets.

Tragedy struck the family in 1992. ? Albert, their youngest, died in a car accident on the way to The University of Maryland. ?Judy?s hand shook uncontrollably as she hung his ornaments on the tree the following Christmas. Steve had not wanted to put up the tree. He felt that they should cancel Christmas and take the family as far away from their home as possible. But Judy insisted the tree be put up. ?Seeing the ornaments hang on the conifer?s branches healed her battered heart. ?She stretched out on the floor every night, staring at the tree and cried.

Soon there were ornaments with college mascots, wedding photos and birth announcements. Grandchildren?s favorite toys hung from the branches. ?The joy of the early 1970?s returned as the little kids stared in awe at the giant tree covered with ornaments. ?Judy loved the tell the kids the stories behind every single one of them.

In 2005, Steve retired as a Rear Admiral. ?A single star hung from a branch signifying his distinguished naval career. ?Judy survived a bout with breast cancer earlier that year and a pink ribbon was placed on the tree. ?They continued to travel. ?Ornaments from towns from far across the nation soon joined the tree. They were where their children now lived. The tree and the memories it represented filled the empty nest.

?Steve, get up in the attic and get the boxes down. It?s time to decorate the tree.?

Grumbling preceded the retired Admiral as he faked protest. ?He knew the importance of this day.

First the lights went up. Then the beads. Christmas music from every year of their marriage played on the iPad. Then came the red ribbons. The sacred red ribbons. They always were the first to go on. Each box held ornaments from an event, place or person. She and Steve put up Albert?s ornaments. Her hand shook slightly as she looked as her lost son?s handsome face. Copious tears ran down her cheeks. ?How she missed the boy.

Then, branch by branch, the ornaments filled up the giant Scotch Pine.

Their Christmas was a scrapbook of their life together. Branches were chapters and ornaments were pages. Each represented a special time or place.

Steve and Judy held hands and admired their work when they finished. To them, it was more than just a Christmas tree. It represented their amazing life together.

It was their family tree.

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

November 22nd, 2012 by admin

There are already a significant number of pet loss grief counselors in the United States. They have been certified to offer mental health and emotional support in a unique field. However, those with certification should be aware of the requirements to get recertified. Certification typically lasts three years. To be eligible to renew pet loss grief certification, the medical doctor, nurse or minister must have been actively practicing. In other words, it may be desirable to reapply several months before current certifications are due to lapse. The counselor must have been in practice for about 500 hours or more during the last two or three years. He or she should also have had 50 hours of continuing education. The standards for pet loss grief continuing education are somewhat tolerant and can include seminars and college courses. Publications in academic journals may meet up to half of the 50 hour requirement.

After stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner took part in various interviews as part of a "Breaking Dawn" media blitz, the Internet started buzzing about hints the actors had dropped about a twist in the last movie of the ?Twilight? series. A twist? There was no twist in the books. Would something be different? Would the ending be changed? Would protagonist Bella Swan (Stewart) end up with someone besides her vampire husband Edward (Pattinson)? What did it mean?

And now the movie, ?The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 2? (ask film critics how happy they are not to have to type that out anymore) has been released, and it was discovered that, while there was a twist, it didn?t affect the outcome of the story as a whole, though it did get the audience on the edge of their seats.

You see, to make a very long story short, the end of ?Dawn? has Bella, Edward, and their vampire family facing off against evil vampires. At one point, it looks like a fight begins and Edward?s foster father, one of his foster brothers, and the leader of the evil vampires, among others, bite the dust (no pun intended) in the attack. Then it turns out that this was all a vision, a hypothetical situation, if you will. One of the good vampires, who can see the future, has shown the vision to the leader of the evil vampires to show him what the cost of the two sides fighting would be. This helps convince the head evil vampire (Michael Sheen, who by all accounts goes gloriously crazy as bad vampire Aro in this movie) to call off the battle.

Of course, while this scene was not actually a change to the plotline (it?s referenced in the books that Aro is made to see the vision, though the reader only hears about it afterwards), some fans still didn?t like it.

My take? Good for them for changing SOMETHING (even if, comparing it to the text, it?s an incredibly small change).

I know that adapting a book into a film is an incredibly delicate balance, even more so when the book has a devoted fanbase attached. But the director and the creative team behind him or her needs to feel free to create the best product, the best movie, that they can without it being obvious that they tied themselves to every word on the page of that book.

Research In Motion shares climb

TORONTO (AP) ? Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. Jumped nearly 14 percent Friday as investors seemingly grew more optimistic about a February launch of the Canadian company's much-delayed BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

RIM will release the latest version of its smartphone "not too long" after a Jan. 30 launch event, Kristian Tear, the company's chief operating officer, has said.

The new phones are seen as critical to RIM's survival as the smartphone pioneer struggles in North America to hold on to customers who are abandoning BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phones.

The Waterloo, Ontario, company seems to be preparing for a February global launch, a month earlier than many analysts were expecting, according to an analyst with National Bank Financial, a Canadian bank. Kris Thompson raised his shipments forecast for RIM for fiscal 2014 in a research note from Wednesday.

Thompson also increased his price target for the BlackBerry maker to $15 from $12.

RIM shares on the Nasdaq closed up $1.41, or nearly 14 percent, to $11.67 Friday in an abbreviated trading session on Wall Street.

The spike in the BlackBerry maker's shares came after a week of steady gains amid more positive sentiment.

On Wednesday, shares in Research In Motion gained almost 5 percent on the Toronto Stock Exchange even though it was reported that the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board had dropped the BlackBerry maker in favor of Apple's iPhone 5.

Thompson, the National Bank Financial analyst, was bolstered by RIM's new management team, which he said is maintaining the BlackBerry smartphone subscriber base, managing costs and cash, and seemingly readying a February 2013 BB10 global product release, a month earlier than expected.

He said certification of the new BlackBerrys by wireless carriers is the key risk to his prediction and estimate of BlackBerry shipments. Carrier certification, which tests the new devices, can take time.

The new BlackBerry 10 system is designed for the touch screen, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now expect. RIM's current software is still focused on email and messaging and is less user-friendly, agile and robust than iPhone or Android.

Earlier this week, a prominent tech analyst gave RIM's new operating system a small but improved chance of success. Analyst Peter Misek of New York-based Jefferies & Company said he's still giving the BlackBerry 10 operating system only a 20 to 30 percent probability of success.

RIM was once Canada's most valuable company with a market value of more than $80 billion in 2008, but the stock has plummeted since, from over $140 per share. Its decline evokes memories of Nortel, another former Canadian tech giant, which declared bankruptcy in 2009.

Larry Hagman dead at 81, portrayed notorious TV villain J.R. Ewing

(Reuters) - Larry Hagman, who created one of American television's most supreme villains in the conniving, amoral oilman J.R. Ewing of "Dallas," died on Friday, the Dallas Morning News reported. He was 81.

Hagman died at a Dallas hospital of complications from his battle with throat cancer, the newspaper said, quoting a statement from his family. He had suffered from liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver in the 1990s after decades of drinking.

Hagman's mother was stage and movie star Mary Martin and he became a star himself in 1965 on "I Dream of Jeannie," a popular television sitcom in which he played Major Anthony Nelson, an astronaut who discovers a beautiful genie in a bottle.

"Dallas," which made its premiere on the CBS network in 1978, made Hagman a superstar. The show quickly became one of the network's top-rated programs, built an international following and inspired a spin-off, imitators and a revival in 2012.

"Dallas" was the night-time soap-opera story of a Texas family, fabulously wealthy from oil and cattle, and its plot brimmed with back-stabbing, double-dealing, family feuds, violence, adultery and other bad behavior.

In the middle of it all stood Hagman's black-hearted J.R. Ewing - grinning wickedly in a broad cowboy hat and boots, plotting how to cheat his business competitors and cheat on his wife. He was the villain TV viewers loved to despise during the show's 356-episode run from 1978 to 1991.

"I really can't remember half of the people I've slept with, stabbed in the back or driven to suicide," Hagman said of his character in Time magazine.

In his autobiography, "Hello Darlin': Tall (and Absolutely True) Tales About My Life," Hagman wrote that J.R. originally was not to be the focus of "Dallas" but that changed when he began ad-libbing on the set to make his character more outrageous and compelling.

'WHO SHOT J.R.?'

To conclude its second season, the "Dallas" producers put together one of U.S. television's most memorable episodes in which Ewing was shot by an unseen assailant. That gave fans months to fret over whether J.R. would survive and who had pulled the trigger. In the show's opening the following season, it was revealed that J.R.'s sister-in-law, Kristin, with whom he had been having an affair, was behind the gun.

Hagman said an international publisher offered him $250,000 to reveal who had shot J.R. and he considered giving the wrong information and taking the money, but in the end, "I decided not to be so like J.R. in real life."

The popularity of "Dallas" made Hagman one of the best-paid actors in television and earned him a fortune that even a Ewing would have coveted. He lost some of it, however, in bad oil investments before turning to real estate.

"I have an apartment in New York, a ranch in Santa Fe, a castle in Ojai outside of L.A., a beach house in Malibu and thinking of buying a place in Santa Monica," Hagman said in a Chicago Tribune interview.

An updated "Dallas" series began in June 2012 on the TNT network with Hagman reprising his J.R. role with original cast members Linda Gray, who played J.R.'s long-suffering wife, Sue Ellen, and Patrick Duffy, who was his brother Bobby. The show was to focus on the sons of J.R. and Bobby.

Gray confirmed that Hagman had passed away.

"Larry Hagman was my best friend for 35 years," Gray said in a statement. "He was the Pied Piper of life and brought joy to everyone he knew. He was creative, funny, loving and talented, and I will miss him enormously."

Hagman had a wide eccentric streak. When he first met actress Lauren Bacall, he licked her arm because he had been told she did not like to be touched and he was known for leading parades on the Malibu beach and showing up at a grocery store in a gorilla suit. Above his Malibu home flew a flag with the credo "Vita Celebratio Est (Life Is a Celebration)" and he lived hard for many years.

In 1967, rock musician David Crosby turned him on to LSD, which Hagman said took away his fear of death, and Jack Nicholson introduced him to marijuana because Nicholson thought he was drinking too much.

Hagman had started drinking as a teenager and said he did not stop until the moment in 1992 when his doctor told him he had cirrhosis of the liver and could die within six months. Hagman wrote that for the past 15 years he had been drinking about four bottles of champagne a day, including while on the "Dallas" set.

LIVER TRANSPLANT

In July 1995, he was diagnosed with liver cancer, which led him to quit smoking, and a month later he underwent a liver transplant.

After giving up his vices, Hagman said he did not lose his zest for life.

"It's the same old Larry Hagman," he told a reporter. "He's just a littler sober-er."

Hagman was born on September 21, 1931, in Weatherford, Texas, and his father was a lawyer who dealt with the Texas oil barons Hagman would later come to portray. He was still a boy when his parents divorced and he went to Los Angeles with Martin, who would become a Broadway and Hollywood musical star.

Hagman eventually landed in New York to pursue acting, making his stage debut there in "The Taming of the Shrew." In New York, he married Maj Axelsson in 1954 while they were in a production of "South Pacific. The marriage produced two children, Heidi and Preston.

Hagman served in the Air Force, spending five years in Europe as the director of USO shows, and on his return to New York he took a starring role in the daytime soap "The Edge of Night." His breakthrough came in 1965 when he landed the "I Dream of Jeannie" role opposite Barbara Eden.

In his later years, Hagman became an advocate for organ transplants and an anti-smoking campaigner. He also was devoted to solar energy, telling the New York Times he had a $750,000 solar panel system at his Ojai estate, and made a commercial in which he portrayed a J.R. Ewing who had forsaken oil for solar power. He was a longtime member of the Peace and Freedom Party, a minor leftist organization in California.

Hagman told the Times that after death he wanted his remains to be "spread over a field and have marijuana and wheat planted and harvest it in a couple of years and then have a big marijuana cake, enough for 200 to 300 people. People would eat a little of Larry."

The power of business networking - Venus Network

Business networking can help build new relationships and generate opportunities. It?s relatively low cost financially, but involves a time commitment.

The benefits can be significant; not only will you meet like-minded people and learn from their success, but you?ll also increase your confidence and generate referrals.

There are many business networks around so it?s important to know what you wish to achieve. Some groups are based on learning, support or volunteering rather than strictly making business connections. Research the group?s goals, vision and expected commitment levels, then visit to see if it?s the right fit for you.

To get the most out of networking, you need to have a clear understanding of your business and be able to communicate effectively. Think about what you do and why, your point of difference and who your target customer is.

Keep in mind that networking is about building trust and relationships and seeing how you can help others. You?ll stand out and be remembered if you?re known as a resource for suggestions, ideas and contacts.

Danni belongs to the Venus Network, a community of women who support each other to help achieve profitable, sustainable growth in their businesses. As the facilitator of the West Auckland group, she has seen firsthand how learning about each other?s products & services has seen members become advocates for each other and has generated referrals within the group.

92% Holy Motors

All Critics (106) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (97) | Rotten (9)

This is the kind of it-can-mean-whatever-you-want-it-to-mean art film that I usually run from, but Carax is such a prodigiously gifted mesmerist that, if you give way, you're likely to be enfolded in the film's phantasmagoria.

Holy Motors is wild and unfettered and playful - the work of an artist who carries his love of cinema in his bones, and knows how to share that affection with the audience.

This is the most exhilarating cinema ride of 2012, a marvellously mobile mystery trip.

In "Holy Motors" Carax insists on our other selves. His daylong ride is a wary celebration, a joyful dirge that's served up in concentrated form by a roving band of accordion players. It's all in a day's work.

As cryptic and unpredictable as that premise might suggest.

Lavant is splendid in the film, and he's essentially the entire film - and yet, "Holy Motors" is somewhat more than a contraption built for a fearless performer.

All this random action, Carax suggests, is for some vast, abstract audience anxious to lose itself in imagined narratives.

Holy Motors is gloriously alive with experimentation and the centrality of human involvement regardless of what form the end product of their efforts takes.

Weird, baffling, and the lunatic work of a powerfully ambitious filmmaker, 'Holy Motors' is one of the best films of the year.

Andr? Breton would be proud.

I just know Holy Motors tickled me, cosmic pretensions and all.

Some day, an editor is going to put together a highlight reel of Denis Lavant's greatest performances. Will most of it be scenes from Holy Motors?

It's rare that we get the chance to encounter anything this freely inventive, this amusing, this ineffably sad and, yet, this full of life.

A fascinating and heartbreaking study of humanity, one leavened with a refreshing levity and humor that makes Carax's philosophy on life not only palatable, but thoroughly enjoyable.

A stunning exploration of identity in both society and filmmaking that features one of the best performances of the year by some stretch.

A film that not only demands repeat viewings but also makes that an attractive proposition.

A multitude of pleasures abound if one gives into the insane spell the film casts.

An exercise in overindulgence.

A glorious, gross, absurd, haunting dream and deconstruction of identity that may enthrall like a symphony or annoy like a rash.

10 Great Thanksgiving Movies: From 'Home for the Holidays' to ...

"Miracle on 34th Street" (1947): Christmas is the holiday commonly associated with this classic, which actually is set in motion by the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, in which the man (Oscar winner Edmund Gwenn) playing Santa claims to be the real Kris Kringle.

"Alice's Restaurant" (1969): Arlo Guthrie adapts his classic song by playing himself as he visits eatery owner Alice (Patricia Quinn) at Thanksgiving ... and ends up in trouble with the law.

"Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986): One of Woody Allen's warmest comedies gathers an extended family for two Thanksgivings and boasts Oscar-honored performances by Dianne Wiest and Michael Caine.

"Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987): High on many lists of holiday humor, filmmaker John Hughes' tale makes mismatched traveling companions of Steve Martin and John Candy. How mismatched? Well, let's just say, "Those aren't pillows."

"Dutch" (1991): A man (Ed O'Neill) volunteers to bring his love interest's ill-mannered son (Ethan Randall, later known as Ethan Embry) home from prep school for Thanksgiving in another John Hughes-written piece.

"Grumpy Old Men" (1993): Thanksgiving figures into the comedy about longtime enemies (Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau) who start another battle over a new neighbor (Ann-Margret).

"Nobody's Fool" (1994): The holiday of turkey and stuffing also is a factor in director Robert Benton's affecting character study of a small-town ne'er-do-well (Paul Newman).

"Home for the Holidays" (1995): Jodie Foster directed this dysfunctional family story about a woman (Holly Hunter) who heads to her family's Thanksgiving as her life seems to be coming apart.

"The Ice Storm" (1997): It's hardly a happy holiday weekend for Connecticut families stranded by bad weather, and stunned by revelations, in the early '70s. Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver star.

"Pieces of April" (2003): In one of her strongest performances to date, Katie Holmes plays an offbeat young woman determined to reunite her estranged family for Thanksgiving.

Zimbabwe retail group OK H1 earnings up 21 pct

HARARE (Reuters) - Retail group OK Zimbabwe posted a 21 percent rise in first-half earnings on Thursday, driven by continued sales growth in an economy recovering from a decade of contraction.

OK Zimbabwe reported earnings per share of 0.46 cents in the six months to September, up from 0.38 cents a year earlier.

The retailer said the rate of growth in sales had slowed down this year compared to the previous three years since Zimbabwe adopted the use of foreign currencies to replace its own unit, which was destroyed when hyperinflation reached 500 billion percent in December 2008.

This is due to a slow down in Zimbabwe's economy, which is expected to grow 4.4 percent in 2012, compared to 9.3 percent in 2011. The government has revised its initial growth forecast of 9.4 percent for 2012 mainly due to a poor harvest and lower-than-expecte diamond revenues.

Revenue for the period was $231.2 million, a 25 percent increase on $185.6 million registered in the same period last year. After-tax profit was $4.86 million, up from $3.86 million previously.

Zimbabwe's retail sector is one of the fastest growing in an economy that is on the mend under a power-sharing government formed in 2009 by long-ruling President Robert Mugabe and former opposition chief Morgan Tsvangirai, now prime minister.

CSN: 49ers' future now rests with Kaepernick

November 21, 2012, 11:18 pm

Quarterback Alex Smith's day of redemption came 10 months ago against the New Orleans Saints.

On Sunday when the 49ers and Saints meet again, Smith will be watching from the sideline. In what could easily rate as the biggest disappointment of his up-and-mostly-down NFL career, Smith has been benched.

The short- and long-term future of the franchise has been entrusted to Colin Kaepernick, the first quarterback that Jim Harbaugh added to the 49ers after taking over as head coach in 2011.

Smith was informed Wednesday that Kaepernick is the 49ers' new starter, reports Sports Illustrated's Jim Trotter.

[RELATED: Report -- Smith informed Kaepernick will start]

Harbaugh makes the bold move after Kaepernick led an offensive charge that resulted in scoring drives on the 49ers' first four possessions Monday night in a 32-7 rout of the Chicago Bears.

Harbaugh was in no hurry to make a public decision on the 49ers' quarterback situation when he met with the media on Wednesday. He suggested he wanted to keep the Saints guessing.

Still, Harbaugh raved about Kaepernick's first NFL start.

"It was A-plus, plus," Harbaugh said. "He did a great job. Decision making. Everything he did was in the high 90s, A-plus, in terms of how he executed and operated."

And what kind of feedback did Harbaugh receive from the other offensive players?

"I think everyone was excited about it," Harbaugh said.

Kaepernick became the first quarterback the 49ers would acquire under Harbaugh, but this is not about emotional attachment. At least publicly, Harbaugh was Smith's biggest supporter. Harbaugh also signed and later cut Josh Johnson, who played for Harbaugh at the University of San Diego.

If there's one thing we know about Harbaugh, it's that he wants to win football games above everything else. He said not even the birth of his son could have keep him away from the 49ers' season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

This decision was made because Harbaugh believes Kaepernick is better than Smith. And it's a move that Harbaugh certainly envisioned making at some point in the future when a draft-day trade was orchestrated with the Denver Broncos to select Kaepernick.

[RATTO: Impulsive Harbaugh goes all in unnecessarily]

The 49ers moved up nine spots in the second round of the 2011 draft to select Kaepernick with the No. 36 overall pick. The 49ers traded their second-, fourth-, and fifth-round selections to acquire Kaepernick.

But it looked as if Smith's play would keep Kaepernick on the sideline for the foreseeable future.

Smith's shining moment came in the playoffs after the 49ers won the NFC West with a 13-3 record.

The 49ers scored two lead-changing touchdowns in the final 2:11 to defeat the Saints, 36-32, in an NFC playoff game. Smith ran 28 yards for one touchdown. After the Saints scored quickly, Smith engineered a seven-play, 85-yard drive and tossed the winning 14-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis with :09 remaining.

But if Smith thought he had finally arrived and found a home with the 49ers, he received a rude awakening in the offseason as a free agent.

The 49ers made a run at free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning in the offseason. Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman traveled cross-country to watch Manning work out. But Manning called Harbaugh to inform him of his decision to sign with the Denver Broncos.

Shortly thereafter, Smith settled for a three-year, $24 million contract. At the time, Smith was tied for the 18th-highest-paid quarterback in the league. The contract contained no signing bonus, and the 49ers had an easy escape if they decided to cut Smith after one season. Smith is guaranteed just $1 million of next year's scheduled $8.5 million pay.

Smith looked to be well on his way to earning his second year of the contract with a solid start. He is third in the NFL with a career-best 104.1 passer rating. He is completing passes at a league-best 70.0 percent clip. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Arizona Cardinals. In the 49ers' next game, he sustained a concussion that knocked him from the lineup.

That opened the door for Kaepernick. And it opened the door for Harbaugh to make the change.

In making the quarterback switch, Harbaugh is gambling that the 49ers' best chance of winning the Super Bowl is with Kaepernick at quarterback.

After all, the 49ers made it to the NFC championship game with Smith. So the level of expectations has been set for Kaepernick.

15-Day Southern Explorer from Santiago to Rio de Janeiro | World ...

From South America?s natural wonders to some of the region?s most vibrant cities, experience the riches of South America on this comprehensive adventure that takes you from Chile to Argentina and Brazil. Enjoy the perfect combination of guided excursions and free time to explore the beauty of some of the world?s most breathtaking wonders?Patagonia and Iguassu Falls. Sip wine in Santiago, learn to tango in Buenos Aires and live it up in beachside Rio. Travel days are well paced and include short flights, allowing you the time to really experience the region?s highlights?in comfort and style.

?

Day 1 Arrive Santiago

On arrival in Santiago you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The day is free to spend at your leisure.

Santiago is Chile?s largest city and capital, with internationally recognized vineyards and Andean ski resorts very close by. Explore the many museums and parks, and visit the vibrant neighbourhood of Bellavista to see some handicrafts and trendy caf?s. Day trips include a trip to Valparaiso and Vi?a del Mar, Chile?s premier beach resort, and to Isla Negra, Pablo Neruda?s seaside home.

Although Santiago covers an immense area, the central core of the city is relatively small. It is a roughly triangular shaped region, bounded in the north by the R?o Mapocho, in the west by the Via Norte Sur and in the south by the Avenida del Libertador General Bernardo O?Higgins (more commonly known as the Alameda). The apex of the triangle is the Plaza Baquedano, where O?Higgins forms a junction with two of Santiago?s other main thoroughfares, Avenidas Providencia and Vicu?a MacKenna.

The centre of this triangle is the Plaza de Armas, the chief plaza of Santiago, bounded on its northern side by the main post office and on the western side by the cathedral. The streets between the Plaza de Armas and O?Higgins are wall-to-wall shops, restaurants, snack and fast food bars, cinemas, expensive hotels and office blocks. The Presidential Palace, La Moneda, is on Avenida Moneda, facing the Plaza de la Constituci?n. Near the Plaza de Armas is the National Congress building. One of Santiago?s main parks, Cerro Santa Luc?a, is in the triangle facing O?Higgins. The other main park is Cerro San Cristobal, or Huel?n, in the Mapuche tongue. It is a large hill that rises dramatically from the plain to the north of Avenida Providencia. Between this avenue and the mountain, on either side of the Avenida P?o Nono, is Santiago?s ?Paris quarter?, the barrio Bella Vista. Here you find beautifully landscaped parks and gardens, artists? colonies and impressive views over the city, including the snow-capped peaks of the Andes (when the weather and thick smog permit).

Day 2 Santiago

Spend the day enjoying Chile?s tastiest export, wine. Tour different wineries in the Maipu Valley, learn the history of the region?s wineries and learn a thing or two about the art of wine making.

?Day 3-4: Puerto Varas

Fly south to Puerto Varas and Chile?s beautiful Lake District, where you have a couple of days to explore the area and will visit the Petrohue region for some hiking and a glimpse of the volcano. Optional activities include an excursion to the lakeside villages of Frutillar.

Encompassing a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the high peaks of the Andes-approximately 180 km (112 miles) wide, but with a coastline stretching over 4300 km (14104 ft), Chile?s ?geografia loca? (as termed by Benjamin Subercasseaux) includes the driest desert, the Atacama in the north, the agriculturally rich Central Valley, snow-covered volcanoes, forests and tranquil lakes of the near south, and the wild and windswept glaciers and fjords of the far south. And the cuisine at times rivals the natural setting!

There are few areas in the world that can match the Chilean Lake District for scenic grandeur. South of the Rio Tolten and sprawled across the provinces of Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue, you?ll find everything from snow-capped mountains to deep-blue and emerald lakes, smoking volcanoes, forests and glaciers. Outside noisy cities, such as Puerto Montt, the loudest sound you?re likely to hear is the roar of waterfalls streaming down cliff faces into crystal clear pools. This is a favourite vacation ground for domestic tourists, visitors from across the Andes and around the globe.

The region?s architecture is unique in that older structures are wooden and resemble European homes and churches of the 19th Century. This is due to the significant number of immigrants from central Europe (largely Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy) who settled here over the last half of that century. The regional cuisine also reflects this, with many restaurants specializing in kuchen and other baked delicacies. Seafood dishes also abound in this region. Of particular interest to visitors is the curanto Chilote, a hearty seafood stew that?ll leave you ready for a siesta.

?Day 5-6 Bariloche

Travel by bus and ferry to Bariloche, Argentina. Enjoy the sights as the ?Cruce de los Lagos? is considered one of the most scenic cruises in the world. Option to take a boat excursion to visit Puerto Blest. Option to cruise the Blest arm of Lake Nahuel Huapi, passing by Centinela Island and landing at Cantaros Port from where we will be able to walk through the forest and enjoy views of Lake Los Cantaros and the adjacent waterfalls.

Founded in 1902, Bariloche is on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi and is surrounded by mountains and forests. Its name is a play on the words ?Carlos Wiederhold?, who settled down the first general store in the area (that is what ?San Carlos? stands for), and a deformation of the word ?vuriloche? (?different people, people from the back or from the other side?), used by the Mapuche people to refer to other native dwellers from the eastern zone of the Andes Mountain Range before their own arrival in this region.

Bariloche is the gateway Nahuel Huapi National Park, second largest National Park and the first established in Argentina (1903). The region boasts a broken mirror puzzle of lakes, forest, mountains and rivers running along sharp fluvial valleys and dominated by Cerro Tronador (?Thunder Hill?), an inactive volcano that rises 3554 metres above sea level, with 3 glacier covered summits and 8 glaciers falling on eithe sides of the mountain which make it a reference mountain in Patagonia. Other mountains such as L?pez, Catedral, Capilla and Negro, all rise above 2000 metres in altitude and are visible from town and from the different viewpoints along local roads.

It lies 1,640 kilometers from Buenos Aires and it offers first-class accommodation and gastronomical services. In the summer, trout and salmonidae fly-fishing and sports recreation (especially hiking, river rafting and walks around ancient forests, as well as climbing most of the peaks surrounding the city) are some of the activities enjoyed by visitors to this great city. During the winter, the first snowfalls announce the beginning of the ski season and the practice of winter sports at mythical Mount Catedral, considered one of the most important ski resorts in the country. Tours on mountain bike, rowing and horseback rides with the possibility of camping in the thick forests with natural rivers and lakes turn the city outskirts into an ideal setting to have fun with the family. For all these reasons, Bariloche, where youths have spent their graduation trip for decades, has everything all generations look for.

The urban centre of the Argentine Lake District, Bariloche in many ways resembles alpine resorts of Europe. During winter ski season the town fills to capacity with jovial Argentine and Brazilian vacationers whose favourite pastime seems to be eating and drinking. Their gusto is understandable; Bariloche has some of the best food in the country. Sample a beefy parrillada, or a variety of fresh salmon or lake trout, then work it off during a day hike around Cerro Catedral or while practicing your salsa at one of the town?s salsotecas. Careful?Bariloche is also famous for its quality and quantity of chocolate!

Day 5 Travel: Puerto Varas to Bariloche

Approximate journey time: 10-11 hours

Note: This journey is by comfortable bus and scenic ferry and crosses the Chilean/Argentine Border. Travel time is approx. and based on time of year and weather conditions.

Day 7-9 Buenos Aires

Argentina is the second giant of South America with a landscape nearly as varied as its people. Modern and sophisticated, Argentina has much more in common with Europe than with the rest of its neighbours. Enjoy a half-day city tour to familiarize yourself with its sites and sounds.

The capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires is the ultimate cosmopolitan city. Nearly 40 per cent of Argentina?s 33 million citizens live in Greater Buenos Aires, and the Porte?os are justifiably proud of their home. The city is comprised of a number of distinct neighbourhoods, some of which have become top tourist draws. For many, the highlight of their time in the capital is a visit to San Telmo for the weekend antiques market and street artist?s displays. La Boca was originally settled by the successive waves of immigrants that contribute to the capital?s unique character. Its brightly coloured walls and buildings draw Porte?os and tourists alike, and it is here that the world-class football team, Boca Juniors, plies its trade. A Sunday afternoon match at the fabled Bombonera is not to be missed. Posh Recoleta, with its cafes, museums and cemetery, is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

During colonial days Buenos Aires was the seat of the Viceroy of La Plata. Almost completely rebuilt since the turn of the century, the heart of the city is the Plaza de Mayo, with the historic Cabildo (Town Hall), where the Independence movement was first planned, the Casa Rosada (Government Palace) and the Cathedral where San Mart?n, the father of Argentine independence, is buried.

When you are done exploring, settle your weary feet and enjoy a drink in one of the many sidewalk cafes and restaurants and you will begin to understand the contemplative Argentine way of life. And since Buenos Aires will be your last chance to try the succulent bife and parrilladas, dig in and enjoy!

Please note: You should be especially careful when wandering about the capital city on your own, particularly at night. Tourists are easy prey for individual pickpockets or groups of two or more people working as a team on the streets. Pay particular attention to anyone who ?accidentally? spills anything on your clothes or belongings (mustard, etc.), then apologizes and offers to help clean up. They will clean you out instead! Be safe and leave your passport, credit cards, travellers cheques and cash funds you won?t be using immediately in the hotel?s safety deposit box. Most Porte?os are honest and genuinely helpful and friendly, but be safe and enjoy the city!

?Day 10-11 Iguassu Falls

Our visit to Brazil begins with the magnificent Foz do Igua?u, or Iguassu falls, bordering Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. It?s a frenzied city that does not have a lot on offer but serves as a jump-off point for a visit to the Falls.

The torrential Iguassu River crosses the State of Paran? in Southern Brazil from East to West. A few kilometres before its junction with the Paran? River it forms one of the most splendorous natural beauties of the world: Iguassu Falls. Over 2.7 kilometres long and an average flow of 1.750 m3/s, this wonder is located in a very special place. The contrast between the green of the vegetation and the dark colour of the basalt rocks with whirring waters plunging from a 72-meter high cliff is magical. At Iguassu there are 275 falls in all, spread over a 3-km area, some over 80m (262.4 ft) in height, making these cataracts wider than Victoria Falls and higher than Niagara! It should come as no surprise that UNESCO declared the region a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Originally ?discovered? in 1541 by the Spaniard Juan Alvar Nu?ez, he named the falls Saltos de Santa Mar?a. The name we use today means ?great waters? in the Tupi-Guarani tongue. The falls are protected by two National Parks?one in Brazil and another in Argentina. Tours utilise trails and catwalks adapted to the landscape of the area, and walking is easy for all ages; guided tours of the complex are available several times a day. In order to see the falls properly you need to view them from both the Brazilian and the Argentine side: the Brazilian side offers the grand overview, and the Argentine side a closer look. The best time of the year to visit is from August to November, as during rainy season from May to July, flooding will likely prevent closer viewing from the catwalks.

Film buffs will remember that Iguassu was the site of several scenes from the film ?The Mission.? Not far from the falls, the ruins of the Jesuit missions of the era can still be visited on a day trip. Also of interest in the area is Itaip?, the largest hydroelectric complex in the world. Experience an exhilarating optional boat tour or helicopter trip for a bird?s eye view, or simply marvel at nature?s breadth and the roar of the falls.

Day 12-13 Paraty

A travel day takes us to the Atlantic coast and the gorgeous coastal town of Paraty. Wander the cobblestone streets, take a boat trip to the nearby islands in the bay, or visit one of the many white sand beaches that make Brazil famous.

Paraty is a lovely colonial town 125 miles from Rio de Janeiro on Ilha Grande Bay, Brazil?s southeastern coast. It lies on the border between Rio de Janeiro and S?o Paulo states, and is a favourite with those looking to ?get away from it all??Brazilians and visitors alike.

In the 1700?s when the mines of Minas Gerais were pouring out gold, the perfect bay of Parati was a busy port, the second most important in Brazil during the Golden Century. The historic centre is a well-preserved national historic monument, and today has been closed to vehicles.

Founded in 1531, the founders named it Nossa Senhora dos Rem?dios, with Our Lady of the Medicines as the patron saint, and they built the main church in her honour. Enlarged and remodelled over the years, the church is now the focal point of the annual Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Rem?dios on September 8. The festival has been celebrated for over 300 years since a wealthy and reverent benefactor, Maria J?come de Mello, donated the land to the town for the church, requesting only an annual mass in return. The mass has grown into a procession of the wooden effigy of the Virgen though the town, adorned with gold and silver jewellery.

Day 14 Rio de Janeiro

We continue along the coast through superb scenery before rounding the cliffs at Vidigal, where we get our first glimpse of one of the most memorable cities in the world Brazil?s ocean-side jewel, R?o de Janeiro. Enjoy your free time to explore the city using our centrally-located hotel in Copacabana as a base, or take an optional city tour.

?God made the world in six days, the seventh he devoted to Rio,? so say the Cariocas, residents of this beautiful city. This is a densely packed city of over 9 million inhabitants, whose economic foundations lie in the cultivation of sugar cane and gold mining. Referred to as the ?cidade maravilhosa? (Marvellous City), few cities enjoy such a dramatic setting as Rio. Brilliant, white beaches at Copacabana and Ipanema, deep blue waters of the Atlantic, the luminescent green of Guanabara Bay, the bare blue slopes of the Sugar Loaf combine to make Rio unique. Standing over it all, atop Corcovado (Hunchback), is the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer, the best place from which to appreciate the city. Superb panoramic views of the city and area can also be found from the top of the Pao do A?ucar (Sugar Loaf), reached by cable car. Head to some of the famous beaches, and prepare yourself for an experience unlike anything else on Earth.

Although the Portuguese first sailed and entered the bay, it was the French who first established a settlement in the area, logging Brazil wood along the coast. Their first permanent settlement lasted a brief five years, when they were attacked and driven from the area by the encroaching Portuguese. A series of skirmishes ensued, with the Tomaio people allied with the French against the Portuguese.

In 1567 the Portuguese began construction of a fortified town to repel any invaders, naming it Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro. Amassing wealth with the gold rush of Minas Gerais, in the early 18th century Rio became Brazil?s most important city and a great temptation to the French who, in 1710, waged war against the Portuguese and held the city for a sizeable gold ransom. Again in the 19th century, under threat of Napoleon?s invasion, what remained of the Portuguese monarchy fled to Brazil where they set up court in grand style; many of today?s older structures date from this period.

The gold rush was followed by a coffee boom in the mid-1800s and the wealth generated led to the city?s initial modernization. Replacing Salvador de Bah?a as the colonial capital in 1763, the city remained the capital until 1960, when it was replaced by Brasilia. Today, the city is a magnet for tourists who come to walk the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, and generally partake in the Carioca zest for life. Many ascend the Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao do A?ucar), whose image is nearly synonymous with Rio and Carnival. Modern Rio is perhaps best known for the contrasting images offered by the favelhas (shanty towns), and the glitz and glamour preferred by the Samba schools and their Carnival celebrations.
