The Abbotsford Hospice Society's (AHS) recent Charity Golf Tournament raised a record $75,000.

The funds for the event held July 15 at the Falls Golf Club in Chilliwack were raised through registrations, sponsors and activities, but a record-breaking $25,000 came from the live auction.

The tournament was presented by Mainland Sand and Gravel.

Another $75,000 was donated in on-kind support, including $20,000 in food and beverage donations ? from Coast Seafoods, Commerce for Cause, BC Fresh Vegetables and Gelderman Farms ? and $8,700 in rentals from Salmon's Rentals.

Funds from the event will go toward AHS, with a portion earmarked for Holmberg House, an adult hospice under construction at the Campus of Care project next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

AHS provides support to people who are dying and to their families.

"Because of the generosity and efforts of our golfers, sponsors, donors and volunteers, AHS continues to make an immediate and tangible difference in our community when families need it most," said executive director Debbie Lehmann.

The 19-bed Holmberg House is named in memory of Dave Holmberg Jr. His dad, Dave Holmberg Sr., raved about the event.

" ? excellent financial results and wonderful support from the many sponsors, donors, players, and volunteers.?I have been to many?.this one was truly a 9.99 on the 10 point scale.?

The tournament was won by a team from Salmon's Rentals, and dinner was attended by about 200 guests.

Among the items up for auction were a $3,000 pair of diamond earrings and a $3,000 men's ring donated by Lee's Fine Jewellers; culinary time donated by Daren and Stephanie Kennedy which sold for $4,250; a stay at a private residence at Tobiano golf course and four rounds of golf donated by Cori and Gord German which sold for $2,300; and another stay at a private residence and rounds of golf donated by John and Chris Maher which also sold for $2,300.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) ? Inbee Park was hopeful of tough conditions to help her make up an eight-shot deficit at the Women's British Open.

It turned out to be too tough.

Park's ball moved on the fourth green from 40 mph gusts at St. Andrews, and the third round was suspended a short time later. Officials waited nearly six hours before deciding not to resume the third round until 6:15 a.m. Sunday. The hope would be to get 72 holes in by Sunday evening.

Of the nine players who finished the third round, the best score was a 75.

Park, going after a record fourth professional major in the same year, was 1 under through four holes.

St. Andrews is one of the most difficult links courses in Britain when the wind is strong.

Rugby Union: Marshall wants Auckland move

Benji Marshall has confirmed he has opened talks with Super Rugby franchise Auckland Blues as he looks to switch codes.

Marshall wants Auckland move

The rugby league star captained his country to victory in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup and he announced last month that he wanted to leave Wests Tigers.
Since his decision, Marshall has been linked with moves to Super Rugby sides New South Wales Waratahs and ACT Brumbies. The 28-year-old has decided he wants to play his rugby domestically because he has ambitions to turn out for the All Blacks.
Marshall confirmed he held talks with Blues coach Sir John Kirwan and chief executive Andy Dalton on Friday.
He said: "Preferably I'd like to come here (New Zealand). I've got to take into account all my options but the opportunity to maybe one day play for the All Blacks is a pretty big motivator for me.
"Obviously I'm pretty nervous about that but at the same time excited at the prospect of having the opportunity.
"I think I can play a few positions. I'd like to be in control so 10, 12 or even 15. It's looking promising, if it all works out according to plan then hopefully I do end up playing here."

Rovers? football manager Long armed with ?hands-on? advice

FORMER GREAT Britain ace Sean Long has vowed to take a ?hands-on? role at Featherstone Rovers.

Long has been unveiled as Rovers? football manager until the end of the season, working alongside new interim head coach Danny Evans.

Ryan Sheridan, who stepped into the coaching hot seat when Daryl Powell quit the club earlier this year, has left with immediate effect.

He is expected to team-up with Powell again as a member of Castleford Tigers? coaching staff.

Warrington Wolves youth boss John Bastian has already been unveiled as Rovers? head coach from next season.

Long is a three-time Lance Todd Trophy winner, as the Challenge Cup final man of the match.

He played in Super League for St Helens and Hull and had spells on the coaching staff at Salford City Reds and Wigan Warriors after hanging up his boots.

Asked what his new role entails, Long said: ?Lot of hands-on, but also a lot of video footage, how we?re going to break down the defence.

?I know Featherstone have been going really well, but anything I can help with in the last six games of the season and the play-offs then that?s what I?m here to do.?

The former international half-back said that will mean ?tweaking up the moves they?ve already got, making them a little bit better and getting hands-on on training field as well?.

Long feels Rovers are in a good position to win their second Kingston Press Championship Grand Final.

?I am really pleased this opportunity has come up,? he said.

?The previous coaches have done a great job and the players are sitting top of the table (actually second) so it?s a great task in itself.

?Hopefully I can come in and just finish off the job Daryl started. It is great for me.?

Long insists he knows what he?s in for.

?I watch it now and again,? he said of the Championship.

?I watch it on Thursday nights when it?s on Premier Sports and then get to big games where I can.

?I know most of the players anyway as most are ex-Super League players.

?I?ve watched the last three games so know how they play.?

Of the future, he said he is ?just concentrating on this season for the moment?.

But added: ?It?s short-term, but who knows?

?If we win the Plate and the Grand Final, who knows what could happen. I just want to win as many trophies I can with Fev.?

Artificial Ear Grown on Rat's Back

From artificial eyeballs to limbs, doctors have dreamed up dozens of ways to replace body parts when things go wrong.

Now they can add a new device to their repertoire: a lifelike, flexible ear made from cartilage cells seeded on a titanium scaffold.

The new technique, described July 30 in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, is better than previous tissue-engineering efforts and could replace a laborious technique that requires plastic surgeons to fashion a crude ear shape out of a lump of cartilage. The procedure could be used in trauma injury patients who have lost an ear or in children with microtia, a congenital ear deformity, said bioengineer Tom Cervantes, who was at Massachusetts General Hospital at the time of the research.

Prosthetic ears

In the race to create bionic humans, ears have been a surprisingly tricky challenge. Numerous artificial ears are in medical use, but most had problems. Ears made from cartilage cells would often shrivel once implanted onto an animal. Prosthetic ears typically weren't very flexible or realistic-looking. And the reigning practice of extracting cartilage from a person's ribs and fashioning it into an ear was laborious and difficult to match with a person's other ear. Recently, researchers reported they had used a 3D printer to create a bioengineered ear. [The Top 5 Weirdest Prosthetics ]

"For something like the ear where it's very cosmetic in nature, having a proper shape is one of the most important requirements. We wouldn't want it to look like a shriveled nub," Cervantes, who is now at Stanford University School of Medicine in California, told LiveScience.

Cervantes and his colleagues wanted to create something that could be customized. The team started with a 3D computer model and used that to create a titanium mesh of the basic ear shape. They then seeded the mesh with cartilage cells that formed their own matrix over the mesh.

To see how the ear would hold up when connected to a blood supply, the team implanted the ear on several rats' backs and studied them for several weeks. Unlike previous attempts, the ear didn't shrivel up nor become deformed.

Because the design is based on a 3D model, there's no reason that a person couldn't have a matching set of symmetrical earlobes based on their own shape, Cervantes said.

"The way we've gone about creating it paves the way for creating patient-specific ear shapes," Cervantes said.

Dying 2-year-old son to be Pa. couple's best man

JEANNETTE, Pa. (AP) ? A 2-year-old boy with only weeks to live will serve as best man when his parents wed this weekend.

Sean Stevenson and Christine Swidorsky, of Jeannette, had planned to wed next year but decided to move the ceremony up to Saturday so their son, Logan, who has leukemia and other complications, could participate.

"We want Logan in our family pictures, and we want him to see his mother and dad get married," Swidorsky said. Her 13-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, Isabella Johns, will be a bridesmaid, and the couple's 1-year-old daughter, Savannah, will be the flower girl. The story was first reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Logan has Fanconi anemia, a rare disease that often causes cancer. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at 14 months old and had a stem cell transplant a year ago. He lost one kidney to a tumor in March and now has a mass on his other kidney.

Last week, doctors told the couple the boy would live only two to three weeks more.

"It'll be the hardest thing I'll ever do, is bury my son," Stevenson said. "You know it's coming, and you can't do anything about it."

Family and friends have pitched in to organize the wedding, while Logan spends his last few days resting in his parents' home.

Swidorsky said the couple expects about 100 people to attend the wedding.

"The best thing for Logan is to be home with his parents," she said, adding doctors told the couple "he would be in more pain in the hospital."

"I just am thankful that I am able to bring my son home and have time with him and hold him before he goes," Stevenson said. "So, in that sense, I feel lucky that I at least get to say goodbye to my son ... and tell him it's going to be OK."

Swidorsky said she has learned a lot from Logan.

"He's made me a better person," she said. "He's just an angel from heaven, and I'm going to miss him."

Vine updates Android app with push notifications and more sharing options

It's the freakin' weekend, baby, and Vine has an app update for its most loyal Android users. (Actually, any Android user that has access to v4.0 or higher.) Semantics aside, the outfit's app has just been updated with push notifications and more sharing options... or so says its Twitter account. The Google Play link is still showing a prior description, but we're guessing the new build will percolate through momentarily.

Larry Allen among NFL's best -- and brightest

OXNARD, Calif -- We?ve all heard stories about Larry Allen's strength, power and the raw athleticism that made him one of the best offensive linemen ever.

We can all recite the stories about him bench-pressing 700 pounds and chasing New Orleans linebacker Darion Connor 50 yards to prevent a touchdown as a rookie.

And we?ve all seen video of him destroying linebackers and defensive backs when he pulled, creating running lanes for Emmitt Smith.

?Across the board, he was the best football player I ever played with -- and I played with them all,? former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson said. ?Troy (Aikman), Emmitt, Michael (Irvin), Deion (Sanders) ... Larry Allen was the best.

?He was also the smartest.?

Say what?

That?s right, talk to any player or coach who played with Allen during his 12 seasons in Dallas and they?ll tell you he was among the game?s most intelligent players.

Former offensive line coach Hudson Houck used to joke that Allen was the best offensive linemen on the field and in the classroom.

?He wanted to know everyone?s assignment,? six-time Pro Bowl guard Nate Newton said. ?If the quarterback was rolling out, he wanted to know exactly where he was supposed to end up so he could adjust his block properly.

?He always asked a lot of questions, but he asked a lot of smart questions. He always wanted to know what we were supposed to do if the defensive player didn?t do what we thought he would do.?

Allen, a second-round pick from tiny Division II Sonoma State, was a second-round pick in the 1994 draft. Six games into the season, he was starting. The six-time All-Pro played every position except center on the offensive line.

?Do you know how smart you have to be to go from playing at Sonoma State to starting for a two-time Super Bowl champion?? Woodson said. ?Think about how big that jump is. Think about the kind of offense we had in Dallas and what he ran at Sonoma State.

?I don?t know how Larry did in math or what kind of grades he made, but he understood everything about football and concepts and that?s what helped make him a great player. He anticipated things because he knew where everyone was on the field and he could adjust.?

U.S. raises military assistance to the Philippines

MANILA (Reuters) - Washington will raise its military assistance to the Philippines by about two-thirds, Manila's foreign ministry said on Wednesday, helping its oldest security ally in Asia defend vast maritime borders against what it sees as Chinese assertiveness.

Albert Del Rosario said Washington had increased its military assistance package from $30 million next fiscal year to about $50 million, the highest level since U.S. troops returned to the Philippines in 2000.

"For military financing, it's an allocation that is worked out by the U.S. Congress, and its usually for acquisition and maintenance," Del Rosario told reporters.

Rosario said the Philippines may acquire a third Hamilton-class cutter to boost its efforts to patrol sea borders in view of recurring standoffs with China over territory in the South China Sea.

The Hamilton-class high endurance cutter is the largest and newest warship in the Philippine Navy. The first two ships were acquired free of charge under the excess defense articles (EDA) under which Washington provides old equipment no longer in active use. But $25 million was spent to refurbish them.

The second cutter is to arrive next week in Subic Bay, a former U.S. Navy base, 50 km (30 miles) northwest of Manila, where it will be repainted before joining its sister ship on patrols.

A senior military official, however, told Reuters that the Philippines may shelve the plan to acquire the third cutter and use the funds to upgrade the two vessels now in its fleet with a missile system.

Since 2002, the United States has provided the Philippines a total of $312 million in military aid as well as various types of military equipment.

Until the early 1990s, U.S. troops operated from two large military bases in the Philippines, providing a security umbrella in the country's decades of fighting against Maoist and Muslim insurgents.

There are now plans to allow Washington wider access to civilian and military bases to help its former colony enhance its defense capability.

New Barcelona coach Martino's tactics fit Barca's style

Gerardo Martino was appointed as Barcelona's coach on July 22.

David Ramos/Getty Images

All events depend, to an extent, on chance, on a thousand, a million circumstances coinciding. It may be that Gerardo Martino is ousted from Barcelona at the end of the season having finished second in the league and having failed to take them to a seventh successive Champions League semi-final and his appointment will be seen as a regrettable short-term move necessitated by the dreadful news that Tito Vilanova requires further treatment for cancer. Or it may be that he achieves glory, a new dynasty is begun, and the world looks on the turbulent events of this summer and reflects on what a peculiar business appointing a manager can be.

"I don't believe in luck, but in certain cases, luck, or fate, has to be on your side," said Juan Manuel Llop, who was a teammate of Martino's in the great Newell's Old Boys side that won the Clausura and reached the final of the Copa Libertadores under Marcello Bielsa in 1992. "Look at Martino. If Barcelona had had to replace Vilanova a year ago, he wouldn't have been appointed. If Newell's had advanced to the Copa Libertadores final, he wouldn't have been on [vacation] and probably wouldn't have been willing to talk to other club and therefore he wouldn't have been appointed. But it happened."

It may be debatable whether anybody would have actually refused to talk to Barcelona, even if they had been about to lead the club they'd always supported into a Libertadores final, but the general point is a sound one. A year ago, Martino was a coach who had won four league titles in Paraguay and led the Paraguay national side to the quarterfinal of the World Cup and the final of the Copa America with a string of grindingly negative displays. After a year at Newell's, though, his attacking principles have re-emerged -- it scored 40 goals in 19 games in winning the Clausura. That was vital to him getting the job at Camp Nou, for it is by philosophy more than by past record that Barcelona appoints its coaches.

"I'm convinced that he's going to be successful," said Llop. "But it's also important to know why he's been appointed. And this is what makes the difference. Most of the clubs just look at results and they decide to set up a new project with a successful coach. Successful in the last year, or in the last few months. But you need to go deeper if you want to make a serious choice. In Argentina, it's one patch over another: there's no project. And Martino, at Newell's, started something serious. The differences were suddenly visible."

Having played under Bielsa, having been the creative and emotional hub of that '92 side, Martino shares the key tenets of the Barcelona model: pressing, ball-retention, fluidity. And yet logical as his appointment was, it still came as a shock. "I was as surprised as he was," said Llop. "As his assistants and relatives were. But Barcelona is the place where any manager in the world dreams of being. It's a place reserved just for the chosen ones. And the surprise in this case is that that normally means managers that have had a career in Europe. The surprise in this case is that Martino hadn't coached in Europe yet. But at the same time I ask myself: why not? Because he has a philosophy that is very similar to Barcelona's. And that's very important, especially for that club with such firm principles."

"He has an excellent squad and, more importantly, the players have all given public support to his arrival. If that happens also in the dressing-room, the manager will be able to work easily. I'm sure that it will be a continuation of the process that [Pep] Guardiola started. There won't be a tactical revolution or players having to assume completely new ideas."

Yet his time with Paraguay showed that Martino could be pragmatic. Robbed of his one real creative presence when Salvador Cabanas was shot in the head in a bar in Mexico City, he didn't try to force players to play in a way unsuitable for them, accepting that the only way for them to progress was by closing matches down. "He's sharp at understanding the kind of players he has and the best kind of football he can play with them," said Llop. "With Paraguay, it was one style. With Newell's, his best bet was to play another type of football, close to Barcelona's way of playing in terms of ball possession and attacking, and here it will be the same. It's how he understood football as a player: neat passing, always thinking of the opposition goal. You need the players to do it. Paraguay didn't have them, and as a manager, you must bring out the best of your footballers."

What he has shown, though, is that he can organize a defense and that means that, particularly in the later rounds of the Champions League, Martino's Barca may take a rather more dogged approach than other recent incarnations.

Anthony Weiner Marriage Poll Finds Many Think Huma Abedin Should Go Rather Than Stay

Should Huma Abedin, wife of embattled former congressman and New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, file for divorce in the wake of his latest scandal?

According to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll of 1,000 people, Americans are more likely to say that Abedin should end her marriage, rather than stick around and work on it.

Thirty-nine percent of poll respondents said that Abedin should file for divorce, while just 22 percent said she should stay and try to work on their marriage. Another 39 percent percent said they weren't sure.

Weiner resigned from his congressional seat in 2011 after admitting to sending lewd pictures and messages to women online. He is currently running for mayor of New York City, but his campaign was rattled last week by his admission that he continued the explicit chats even after resigning from office.

Among the 45 percent of respondents who said they had "heard a lot" about Weiner's continued sexting, 48 percent said that Abedin should file for divorce and only 19 percent said that she should not.

Nearly all Americans think what Weiner did counts as cheating, according to the survey. Eighty-two percent said that it does, while only 8 percent said that it does not.

In an additional blow to Weiner, respondents said -- by a 64 percent to 20 percent margin -- that politicians' unfaithful behavior is relevant information for voters to consider. Still, respondents in the Northeast were the least likely to say so -- 57 percent in the Northeast said that it was, compared to 67 percent each in the Midwest and West and 64 percent in the South.

For more interesting survey results, scroll through the slideshow below.

  • Fifty-one percent of Republicans polled said Abedin should file for divorce, compared to the 29 percent of Democrats.

  • Forty-six percent of respondents who live in the Midwest said Abedin should divorce Weiner, compared to 38 percent in the Northeast, 33 percent in the South and 35 percent in the West.

  • Eighty-eight percent of women said that sexting someone other than your spouse counts as cheating, compared to 75 percent of men.

  • Ninety percent of people over 65 considered sending lewd texts to someone other than your spouse to be cheating, compared to 70 percent of 18-29 year olds.

  • Forty-eight percent of the registered voters who responded to the poll said that they had heard a lot about the Weiner scandal, compared to 26 percent of respondents who are not registered voters.

  • Forty-three percent of respondents who did not complete high school had heard nothing about the Weiner sexting scandal. In contrast, only 1 percent of people who had completed post-grad education hadn't heard anything about the news and 9 percent of people with college degrees.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll was conducted July 25-26 among 1,000 adults using a sample selected from YouGov's opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population. Factors considered include age, race, gender, education, employment, income, marital status, number of children, voter registration, time and location of Internet access, interest in politics, religion and church attendance.

The Huffington Post has teamed up with YouGov to conduct daily opinion polls. You can learn more about this project and take part in YouGov's nationally representative opinion polling.

Controlling contagion by restricting mobility: In the face of an epidemic, even moderate travel restrictions would slow contagion

[unable to retrieve full-text content]In an epidemic or a bioterrorist attack, the response of government officials could range from a drastic restriction of mobility -- imposed isolation or total lockdown of a city -- to moderate travel restrictions in some areas or simple suggestions that people remain at home. Deciding to institute any measure would require officials to weigh the costs and benefits of action, but at present there's little data to guide them on the question of how disease spreads through transportation networks. However, a new study comparing contagion rates in two scenarios -- with and without travel restrictions -- shows that even moderate measures of mobility restriction would be effective in controlling contagion in densely populated areas with highly interconnected road and transit networks.

How Giant Black Holes Spin: New Twist Revealed

A newly discovered way to determine the spin of monster black holes could help shed light on the evolution of these bizarre objects and the galaxies they anchor.

Astronomers watched as a black hole?that sits at the core of a spiral galaxy 500 million light-years from Earth gobbled up gas and dust from its surrounding accretion disk. They were able to measure the distance between the inner edge of the disk and the black hole, which, in turn, allowed them to estimate the black hole's spin.

?If a black hole is spinning, it drags space and time with it, and that drags the accretion disk, containing the black hole's food, closer towards it," study lead author Chris Done, of the University of Durham in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. "This makes the black hole spin faster ? a bit like an ice skater doing a pirouette." [Gallery: Black Holes of the Universe]

Researchers said the technique could help astronomers address broad questions about galactic evolution, which is intimately tied to the growth and activity of the supermassive black holes?that lurk at the heart of most, if not all, galaxies.

"Understanding this connection between stars in a galaxy and the growth of a black hole, and vice versa, is the key to understanding how galaxies?form throughout cosmic time," Done said.

Done and his colleagues used the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton satellite to study the distant supermassive black hole, which contains as much mass as 10 million suns.

This black hole blasts out prodigious amounts of energy as it feeds on the material in its accretion disk. XMM-Newton observed this output in optical, ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths, enabling the astronomers to measure how far the disk sits from the black hole.

Astronomers have calculated the spin of supermassive black holes before. In February, for example, a different research team determined the rotation rate of the black hole at the center of a spiral galaxy called NGC 1365. That group inferred the spin speed by?measuring the distortion of high-energy light emitted by iron atoms in the accretion disk.

It's tough to describe black-hole spin rates because they don't really translate into familiar terms, such as miles per hour. For example, the NGC 1365 team, which used observations by XMM-Newton and NASA's NuStar spacecraft, found the black hole's rotation rate to be 84 percent of the maximum allowed by Einstein's theory of general relativity.

In the new study, Done and his colleagues estimated that the black hole found 500 million light-years away ? which is powering a superluminous "active galactic nucleus" known as PG1244+026 ? has a relatively low spin rate.

"This contrasts with the recent X-ray determinations of (close to) maximal black hole spin in other [similar galaxies] based on relativistic smearing of the iron profile," the researchers wrote in the study, which was published online today (July 29) in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

"Better high-energy data are required in order to determine whether this new method gives a spin estimate which is consistent with that derived from the iron line, or whether it instead reveals a lack of understanding of disc continuum emission and/or of disc reflection," Done and his team wrote.

Factbox: Hacking talks that got axed

By Jim Finkle

(Reuters) - Hacking experts and product manufacturers have sometimes been at odds over whether the disclosure of security vulnerabilities is helpful, or harmful, to the public interest.

Lawsuits, or even the threat of legal action, have resulted in the cancellation of some hacking presentations in recent years. Here are some examples, ahead of this week's Black Hat and Def Con hacking conferences in Las Vegas:

2005 - Cisco Systems Inc persuaded security firm Internet Security Systems to pull a discussion on hacking routers by researcher Michael Lynn at the Black Hat annual hacking conference in Las Vegas.

On the eve of the conference, Black Hat organizers had workers tear out Lynn's presentation materials from a printed handbook given out to thousands of attendees. Lynn gave the talk anyway, was fired by ISS, and an injunction was obtained to block further public discussion.

2007 - Security firm IOActive Inc pulled a talk that researcher Chris Paget was due to present at Black Hat DC on bugs in radio-frequency identification, or RFID, technology, saying it was pressured to do so by RFID technology firm HID Global Corp.

2008 - Three MIT undergrads canceled a Def Con talk in Las Vegas on hacking the "Charlie Card" payment cards for Boston's subway system after an injunction by a U.S. federal court. A judge later rescinded the order, allowing them to go public.

2013 - Three European computer scientists canceled a talk on hacking the locks of luxury cars at a prestigious U.S. academic conference to be held in August, after Volkswagen AG obtained a restraining order from a British court.

Their paper, which was titled "Dismantling Megamos Crypto: Wirelessly Lockpicking a Vehicle Immobilizer," identified ways to hack into the lock systems of luxury cars including Porsches, Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis.
