Five favorite Kickstarter projects ending this coming week | Digital ...

kickstarter

If you've missed out on the latest cool ideas from Kickstarter that are about to end, we've listed five projects worth supporting and are ending this coming week.

With so many Kickstarter projects coming and going, it?s hard to keep find or keep track of ideas you?re actually interested in. Luckily for you, like last week?s roundup, we?ve rounded up our five favorite Kickstarter projects, this time featuring a few with approaching deadlines. So don?t miss out on getting on the in with these projects before it?s too late.

MARTIAN Watch

martian watch

The smart watch has become a hot commodity and a Kickstarter classic, and this smartphone-controlling, sleek device is no exception.?MARTIAN?s voice command watch is a snazzy alternative to pulling out your smartphone for every task. Fortunately with the Bluetooth connection, just about any native features to your iPhone or Android tare accessible via voice through the MARTIAN watch. You can make phone calls, send text messages using your voice thanks to its speech-to-text tech, and even access Siri, S-Voice, or Google Voice to command your phone to fill out your calendar. A small OLED display on the very bottom of the watch?s face will stream your text messages and other notifications, although the display itself won?t be the most enviable feature of the watch due to the size of the screen. You can also have messages read back to you, should you prefer.

The watch comes in an assortment of styles and colors and the Kickstarter cost, while half the price of its retail value, is between $95 and $125 per watch.

The project ends on September 30, at 12:00 PM EST.

DreadBall

dreadball

The majority of Kickstarter gaming projects that have been wildly successful and basked in the crowd-funding limelight have been computer games, consoles, or other gaming related hardware. DreadBall on the other hand, is a sci-fi sports-based board game developed by Mantic Games. The game play reminds us of a mix between Risk, soccer, American football, and even Quidditch, all wrapped up onto a single game board. The game pieces and even the game board are customizable. Mantic Games? DreadBall Kickstarter campaign has been wildly successful and has raised over $500,000 on a pledge goal of $20,000.

As of writing this, only five copies of the game remain at a cost of $100, and just 85 remain at a pledge level of $150.

The project ends on September 30, 5:00 PM EST.

?

Foundation Dock?

foundation dock

Now this just might be a personal favorite of ours. It?s a simple concept but in an incredibly sleek form factor: The Foundation Dock can hold a single iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S3, anywhere, anyhow. While your smartphone is charging, you can contort the Foundation Dock?s flexible cable neck to bend into just about any position for the comfort of an undertaking? like, say, watching Netflix while lying on your bed before falling asleep. Not only this, but the dock is multi-functional. The base of the hub contains several USB ports, a speaker and mic, and the neck is removable and rugged. You can wrap the cable around a pole for taking timed photos of yourself in a manner similar to the Gorillapod.

To purchase a cable, you?ll have to pledge $45 or more and only 25 of the dock and cable combo at the $99 pledge value are left.

The project ends on October 2 at 4:36 PM EST.

CruxSKUNK?

cruxskunk

Why purchase a keyboard when you own an iPad? You?ve heard that one before, but the accessories are practical, functional, and portable to carry around your iPad in lieu of a four pound laptop. From a firsthand glance, the design of the QWERTY keyboard is familiar to what you?d find on a Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, but it offers a look and feel that you?ll already be comfortable with. Not only is it a keyboard, though, and it can also serve two other purposes: The most obvious is that you can use the CruxSKUNK as an enclosure or iPad case. The third is that it can be used as an iPad stand since the keyboard can bend back on a patent pending 360-degree hinge.

The one caveat is the steep cost of the keyboard, which runs for $155 (with the $135 pledge having sold out) and that?s just the early bird special exclusive to Kickstarter. Other iPad keyboards, albeit less structurally sound and robust, run between $60 and $80. But it is the best for-iPad keyboard that we?ve seen yet so if you?re willing to make the investment (after all, you?ve spent hundreds upon hundreds for the purchase of the iPad alone) we?d recommend that you get your hands on one of these.

The project ends on October 3 at 4:56 PM EST.

Pro Pinball?

propinball

Some of you might remember before video games there were these things called pinball machines. And between 1996 and 2000, Pro Pinball was among the leading pinball simulations on the market at the time. Silverball Studios is looking to recreate its four classic games, The Web, Timeshock!, Big Race USA, and Fantastic Journey. And to top it off, with the help of Pat Lawlor, who was the man responsible for designing the best selling pinball table game, The Adams Family, Silverball Studios plans on developing an entirely new pinball game that will be designed based on its supporter?s input. The games will be made for PC, Mac, iOS XBLA, PS3, PS Vita, Linux, OUYA, and the Kindle Fire. To suit the contemporary expectations, the studio intends to support the maximum resolution possible for each device to make the experience as realistic as possible, and bolster its physics engine.

The project ends on October 5 at 4:00 AM EST

The Marine Installer's Rant: nmea

Who needs Vegas when you can go to the Royal Pacific Resort. You?couldn't find a better place to hold the National?Marine Electronics Association's 2012 annual conference. This is my second year as judge for the annual NMEA technology awards. I was joined by Tim Queeney, editor of Ocean Navigator magazine who is this year's senior judge. You know this because his robe has the four gold stripes. Glenn Law, editor of Saltwater Sportsman is our new judge who replaced Ben Ellison.

I'll grant you the plane ride is a long one, but?you're met at the lagoon by friendly?resort?staff who?wield?their?machetes to help clear a path to the resort check in area.

The rooms are?certainly airy and all feature sunset views. The swinging beds are very comfortable, and form fitting. The gentle rocking of your bed in the tropical breezes gives you a great nights sleep.

The fresh water private swimming lagoon is the perfect place to just loll around in warm volcanic vent heated water. Mix this with beverages served in a coconut shells, and you have a perfect afternoon.

This was then followed by a Luau style dinner prepared by the local resort staff. The main entree was a delicious native?specialty?called long pig.?Unfortunately?the Fusion guy seemed to have disappeared before I could interview him about the award.

This years conference schedule was busy. The normal NMEA conference was overlayed with the RTCM (Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services) conference.

The general boating public doesn't hear much about RTCM, but this group plays a critical role in developing the communication standards for DSC, EPRIB, AIS, GPS and other forms of marine radio communications and IMO electronic charting. There was a multitude of training classes and seminars, most of which were presented twice giving participants fewer scheduling conflicts. The vendor exhibit hall was open half days, allowing easy access.? Going forward NMEA has some real challenges. The winds of change are blowing at almost gale forces at the marine electronics industry. The NMEA 2000 standard has proved to be a game changer for the better, and the new OneNet marine Ethernet standard has the potential to do the same, but...

The often disparate interests of boat builders, marine electronic manufacturers, and their dealers, big box retailers, Internet discounters, third party developers, certified or just compatible, and so on will make going forward like walking a tightrope in an earthquake.?

NMEA has?successfully?come a long way in a very short time, and the roles of those who have to make the stuff work on a boat have changed also. Its been years since circuit diagrams have been included in manuals, and to be brutally honest, installation of systems today are largely just plug and play. The traditional electronics installer has really become a systems integrator, and sometimes interior designers. Their purview now extends to digital power distribution, audio and video, Bluetooth, WiFi, satellite communications, mobile devices, engine monitoring systems, vessel security, and often we deal equipment built to other international standards. Then add to this the exponential increase in technology, most of which will have a very short lifespan.?

So is NMEA worth our support? I would give it a resounding yes. Just think of what it would be like without NMEA. Things would be a mess. Every manufacturer would have differing?technologies. Systems wouldn't talk to other systems. Chaos would reign and the?Apocalypse would be near at hand. Maybe that's a slight?exaggeration, but NMEA makes my job easier, and more importantly both predictable, and reliable. I?choose NMEA certified gear first, if at all possible.?

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Bruce Angus who is currently NMEA's executive director. He is an engineer by training, has extensive business experience, terrific people skills, and is a good listener. Take this from a guy who spent decades working for high technology engineering companies, this is a rare and very valuable?combination. So Bruce will do very well at NMEA's helm, and the only practical advice I can proffer to him is to find out what NMEA doesn't do well, and then don't do it.?Next year, on to San Diego. Same Installer time, same Installer channel, with four gold stripes on my robe.

Tornado hits fair in Spain, flood deaths reach 10

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? A tornado swept through a fair ground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said that a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started on Friday morning are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

China's manufacturing declines, but at slower pace

BEIJING (AP) ? A business survey shows China's manufacturing declined again in September, though the slowdown might be bottoming out.

HSBC Corp.'s latest purchasing managers' index, based on a survey of more than 400 companies, was 47.9 for September, slightly up from 47.6 in August. The index measures manufacturing activities on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 show a contraction.

The HSBC report shows China's manufacturing contracted for the 11th straight month in September, as new export orders fell at the sharpest rate in 42 months amid weak international demand.

HSBC's China economist Hongbin Qu said in an accompanying statement that "the sharper contraction of new export orders and the lingering pressures on job markets mean that Beijing should step up easing to support growth and employment."

Family Mealtime Prayers

Scripture Prayers for All Ages and Occasions

Guest blog by Dale Cangelosi

One rut most of us are in is the rut of the mealtime prayer. We tend to say the same thing to God every time we ask the blessing at a meal with our family or friends. Maybe?you pray, ?Bless this food to our bodies and us to your service,? or ?God is great, God is good, and we thank him for our food.? Whatever your prayer rut might be, this book has been written for you.

These prayers are meant to be used around the breakfast, lunch, or dinner table. They are based upon the Word of God, the Bible, and so they are full of variety to help you get out of your rut. They are also full of truth that is as nourishing as the food before you. As you sit down with your family each day, you can select one of the prayers offered in this book. After you have finished eating, read and discuss the Scripture passages associated with the prayer. Reflect on the truth of God?s Word and apply it to your family?s particular situation.

We pray that God would use these mealtime prayers to not only renew your prayer life and equip you to pray with confidence. It will also to reach your children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, instill Christian truths and godly character within their hearts. Using this book at your mealtimes will draw your entire family into a closer walk with the Lord and with one another.

Online Gaming ? A New Industry ? headline news

Many aspects of our lives have been changed by the advent of high speed internet connections and this also includes the way we play games. Till a few years back, those who were interested in computer games could enjoy the same playing all alone or maximum with one more person. The gaming consoles had a limit that permitted just two players at a time to play the same game on the same console. Apart from this, not all games were designed as multiplayer ones. Online gaming is changing all this. Now you can easily pit your gaming skills against millions of other online gamers by logging on to the net. There are many games which you can play for free, though there are many games which have to be purchased before you can play them online. Check out the leading social networks and you will be amazed to see the quality of the games they offer. People form groups by joining hands with others to play such games. Because joining a group increases the overall strength of the individual, hence it is essential.

The more the number of players in your group, the stronger you are. You can also seek help from experienced members of your group to help you complete tasks by borrowing the necessary resources from them. It might sound amazing but in most cases a single group might have people from nearly every country in the world. Though the leading online games are free, they come with certain riders. The player, who wants to complete the game faster than normally possible, can do so by purchasing extra points from the gaming company. Since the gaming companies are spending a huge amount of money to maintain their servers this is not a bad idea. Just imagine 5 million and more people playing the same game at the same time and you will understand the computing power required. Various types of online games are available and they range from those that are meant for teens right down to those that are meant for mature adults. What is being seen today is just the tip of the iceberg. It shall not be long before advanced versions of these games will appear making them more interactive for the players. The masses will soon be experiencing online gaming in a big way. Get some more info on slots jackpot and best casino.

What Is A Workforce Computing Strategic Plan...And Why Do You ...

Regardless of what our minds conjure up when we think of airline travel, one thing we can readily observe is that while the weather, the experience of the flight crew, the mechanical condition of the aircraft, and the destination of the flight are all variables, the system?of getting an aircraft from one place to another, in one piece, is extraordinarily reliable. Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines once joked that the airline business is the only place where the capital assets travel at 500 miles per hour.

Every commercial flight starts with a flight plan, a flight crew, an aircraft, and a destination. The dispatcher creates the plan based on the expected conditions for the flight, the limitations of the pilot and passengers, and the capabilities of the aircraft. Time is built into the plan to climb to cruise altitude and to descend again to reach the destination safely. How much fuel will be required is built into the plan and pumped into the tanks. Every activity is done to achieve a singular purpose: getting the aircraft and its passengers safely to the destination, and everyone involved knows where the destination is. Aviation is a study in viable systems design.

How strange it seems then, that thousands of IT projects begin every day, but more than one-third of them crash enroute. Why? I would argue that it's because there is seldom a clear destination in mind, a rational plan to get there, or a viable system approach?in place to execute the plan. Most of the time, the destination and the means to get there are only vague estimates, and the elements of the strategy are rooted in hope.

A viable system approach is the inspiration behind Forrester's Workforce Computing Strategic Plan research. A viable system for workforce computing requires five things:

  • A clear understanding of the aim of the organization.
  • A clear understanding of how each project will help to achieve the aim of the organization.
  • A clear understanding of the destination for each project.
  • Organizations capable of reaching the intended destinations.
  • A clear definition of the?system?needed to reach each destination.
    ?

W. Edwards Deming, widely credited as the father of the Japanese quality movement, said it best: "If you can't describe what you're doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing." Every activity must be a step in a sequence of events intended to achieve a clear purpose.

How does it apply to your IT organization and workforce computing specifically? If the aim of your organization is to become the largest provider of farm equipment in the world, and the core business strategy to reach the goal is to provide the highest quality farm tractors at the lowest possible cost, then every workforce computing initiative must be evaluated and prioritized based on how well it will help employees achieve the business strategy and reach the business' destination. Further, each project must begin with a close look at the conditions outside, a clear understanding of the capabilities of the organization, the limitations of the equipment, and agreement that the destination is truly within reach. Anything less creates a corrosive culture of mistrust and systemic failure. Culture is the responsibility of leadership.

Hope is not a strategy. The more your organization knows about the conditions outside, the more that people are encouraged to learn and prepare, the more understanding they have of the aim of the business and how their work contributes, the more accurate the strategic planning, the more reliable the execution, and the more rewarding it will be for the people involved. Competitive advantage doesn't come from reactive cultures; it comes from awareness, deliberate action, and careful sculpting of organizational and human capabilities to achieve what your competitors cannot. Most of all, it requires executive leaders who understand systems thinking and who are capable of crafting organizational systems to achieve the aim of the business.

Is the aim of your business clear and the goals within the capabilities of the people and equipment you have? Is your current workforce computing strategy focused clearly on helping employees achieve the goals of the business, or is it centered on other priorities such as security, control, and lowest cost? Is your VDI project headed for failure from the start, or is there a viable system in place to reach a clear destination? If in doubt, you need a workforce computing strategic plan.

Kaiser Permanente Expands its Commitment to Improving the ...

September 27, 2012

Announces Broader Partnership with Safe Routes to School National Partnership, a multiyear program for engaging students, staff, teachers and families in building healthier communities through more walking and physical activity

OAKLAND, Calif. ? With the childhood obesity epidemic a continued threat to the nation?s health, cuts to physical education programs in schools on the rise, and a growing body of evidence supporting walking and increased activity to improve overall health, Kaiser Permanente and Safe Routes to School National Partnership will expand their existing partnership to bring walking and greater physical activity to school communities across the country.

Kaiser Permanente, the nation?s largest integrated health care system, and the National Partnership share goals around the importance of children, staff and parents improving health with walking and activity. The National Partnership will develop a walking-based program, and make it available to the more than 10,000 elementary and middle schools in the Kaiser Permanente service areas and throughout the country. Key components of the program will include a partnership with the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA?), and focus on a biannual walking competition targeting staff, students and their families. This new program will complement Kaiser Permanente?s existing Every Body Walk! campaign.

?Kaiser Permanente has been a long-standing champion of health and wellness in schools and school communities, and we are thrilled to be partnering with them as we expand our programming to children, staff and parents through schools throughout the country,? says Deb Hubsmith, founder and director of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. ?With this commitment we aim to make a big impact on the crisis of physical inactivity by getting more kids walking and engaging in regular physical activity.?

For the past 25 years, Kaiser Permanente has supported health and wellness in schools through several efforts, including its Educational Theatre Program for students and communities, support for school-based health centers, workplace wellness offerings for school teachers and its Community Health Initiatives focusing on Healthy Eating, Active Living. Currently, more than 2 million Kaiser Permanente members spend the majority of their day on a school campus.

?Schools, school districts and the health of the students, teachers, staff and families are of critical importance to Kaiser Permanente,? says Raymond J. Baxter, PhD, senior vice president for Community Benefit, Research and Health Policy at Kaiser Permanente. ?Safe Routes to School National Partnership and Kaiser Permanente share a vision for creating safe, healthy and walkable communities in and around our nation?s schools. By joining forces, we hope that vision can become a reality.?

To raise awareness about the important role that parents, school districts, local governments, police and community partners play in ensuring the safety of children on the trip to and from school, Kaiser Permanente and Safe Routes to School National Partnership are supporting a series of events in conjunction with International Walk-to-School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

About the Safe Routes to School National Partnership
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is a fast growing network of more than 600 organizations, schools and professional groups working to set goals, share best practices, leverage infrastructure and program funding and advance policy change to help agencies that implement Safe Routes to School programs across the nation. British GENES (British Genealogy News and Events): Was the Ulster ...

Tomorrow sees the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant, signed around the world by half a million folk on September 28th 1912 against the prospect of a Dublin based Home Rule parliament for all of Ireland. BBC Northern Ireland has an interesting piece at www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-politics-19746073 about one piece of Covenant lore, namely that prominent Unionist Major Fred Crawford signed the document in his blood.

A forensic test determined to recognise the iron content of blood has now returned a 90% confidence that the signature was not in fact made in blood - though some Unionists are still holding onto the 10% uncertainty factor!

Whatever the politics of it all, the Covenant is still an important genealogical resource, particularly if your ancestor signed it outside of Ireland, for in many cases the address column was actually filled with the place of origin in Ireland - my own great grandfather Robert Currie, for example, signed the document in Glasgow, and gave Knockloughrim in County Londonderry as his place of origin. The census from the previous year, and in previous decades, simply listed him as from "Ireland".

To view the original signatures of the Ulster Covenant, now held at PRONI, and digitised and made available online, visit www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/ulster_covenant.htm.

And if you are wondering, nine men who signed it in China were not part of a Chinese Orange lodge, but members of a Royal Naval vessel! :)

Ark. first Southern state to vote on medical pot

In this Sept 7. photo, marijuana plants grow at the Perennial Holistic Wellness Center, a not-for-profit medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles, Calif. On the November ballot, Arkansas voters will be asked whether centers like these can be legal in its state.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Come November, Arkansas voters will be faced with a question unprecedented in the South: Should qualified patients be allowed to buy medical marijuana from nonprofit dispensaries with a doctor's recommendation?

The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the proposed ballot measure on Thursday, making "The Natural State" the first in the South to ask its voters about medical marijuana, The Associated Press reported. Seventeen other states and the District of Columbia have already legalized medical marijuana to some degree.

The court's review of "The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act" came after the Coalition to Preserve Arkansas Values filed a lawsuit in August that tried to get the proposal off the state's ballot, NBC station KARK 4 of Little Rock reported. The conservative coalition claimed that the 384-word ballot question doesn't properly explain the consequences of passing the 8,700-word law, according to the AP. Even if the act were passed,?approved patients could still be prosecuted under federal law.

"We hold that it is an adequate and fair representation without misleading tendencies or partisan coloring," the court wrote. "Therefore, the act is proper for inclusion on the ballot at the general election on Nov. 6, 2012, and the petition is therefore denied."

The conservative coalition, which includes leaders from the Arkansas Faith and Ethics Council, the Families First Foundation and the Family Council Action Committee, has five days to ask the court for a rehearing, according to KARK 4.

Jerry Cox, the head of the Arkansas Family Council and a member of a coalition of groups opposed to the proposed medical marijuana ballot measure, holds a copy of the proposal as he speaks to reporters in Little Rock, Ark. on Thursday.

An attorney for Arkansas for Compassionate Care ? the group behind the measure ? said he is pleased with the ruling.

"Now that we've passed muster with the Supreme Court we'll begin our campaign to show the people of the state of Arkansas that this is truly a compassionate measure," attorney David Couch told the AP.

Following the decision, opponents soon?responded on Thursday.

"We've shifted into campaign mode," coalition spokesman Larry Page said, according to KARK 4. "We respect the court's decision, but we are very disappointed that this flawed measure will appear on the ballot."

According to the AP, the proposal lets qualified patients or designated caregivers grow marijuana if the patient lives more than five miles away from a dispensary. It also allows minors to use medical marijuana with parental consent. Cancer, Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, HIV and AIDS would all be qualifying health conditions.

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, is against the measure and told reporters Thursday that he's requested an estimate on how much it will cost to regulate the dispensaries if voters pass it.

"If I understand what I think I understand about it, if it passes, it's going to require a whole of administration from the health department," Beebe said, according to the AP. "I don't know where we're going to get it from."

Beebe also told reporters that he doesn't believe Arkansas voters would legalize medical marijuana.

While voters in Arkansas and Massachusetts are expected to have their say on this issue on the November ballot, voters in North Dakota won't, after its state Supreme Court ruled the?initiative?can't appear on its ballot, the AP reported.

(AP) ? The brain that revolutionized physics now can be downloaded as an app for $9.99. But it won't help you win at Angry Birds.

While Albert Einstein's genius isn't included, an exclusive iPad application launched Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to scientists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who's curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under development in Chicago obtained funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein's brain after his death in 1955. The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner's brain as if they were looking through a microscope.

"I can't wait to find out what they'll discover," said Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. "I'd like to think Einstein would have been excited."

After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man's brain in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

Harvey gave samples to researchers and collaborated on a 1999 study published in the Lancet. That study showed a region of Einstein's brain ? the parietal lobe ? was 15 percent wider than normal. The parietal lobe is important to the understanding of math, language and spatial relationships.

The new iPad app may allow researchers to dig even deeper by looking for brain regions where the neurons are more densely connected than normal, said Dr. Phillip Epstein, a Chicago-area neuroscientist and consultant for the museum.

But because the tissue was preserved before modern imaging technology, it may be difficult for scientists to figure out exactly where in Einstein's brain each slide originated. Although the new app organizes the slides into general brain regions, it doesn't map them with precision to an anatomical model.

"They didn't have MRI. We don't have a three-dimensional model of the brain of Einstein, so we don't know where the samples were taken from," said researcher Jacopo Annese of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego. What's more, the 1-inch-by-3-inch Einstein slides on the app represent only a fraction of the entire brain, Annese said.

Annese has preserved and digitized another famous brain, that of Henry Molaison, who died in 2008 after living for decades with profound amnesia. Known as "H.M." in scientific studies, Molaison participated during his life in research that revealed new insights on learning and memory.

A searchable website with images of more than 2,400 slides of Molaison's entire brain will be available to the public in December, Annese said.

"There will be another Einstein and we'll do it like H.M.," Annese predicted. For now, he said, it's exciting that the Einstein brain tissue has been preserved digitally before the slides deteriorate or become damaged. The app will spark interest in the field of brain research, just because it's Einstein, he said.

"It's a beautiful collection to have opened up to the public," Annese said.

Some may question whether Einstein would have wanted images of his remains sold to non-scientists for $9.99.

"There's been a lot of debate over what Einstein's intentions were," museum board member Jim Paglia said. "We know he didn't want a circus made of his remains. But he understood the value to research and science to study his brain, and we think we've addressed that in a respectful manner."

Paglia said the app could "inspire a whole new generation of neuroscientists."

Proceeds from sales will go to the U.S. Department of Defense's National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Md., and to the Chicago satellite museum, which is set to open in 2015 with interactive exhibits and the museum's digital collections.

Video: ?Game Change? wins big at the Emmys

PFT's Morning After: Amazing Sunday, except for refs

PFT's Morning After: My choice for the best game of the day was that insane finish in Tennessee, where the Lions came back from 14 points down with 18 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, only to end up losing 44-41. But the Chiefs-Saints battle was also lots of fun, and every time I looked at the Bengals? 38-31 win over the Redskins I saw one of the league?s bright young stars (either Cincinnati?s A.J. Green or Washington?s Robert Griffin III) making a big play. There was no shortage of greatness on display on Sunday.

(AP) ? Never have American voters re-elected a president whose work they disapprove of as much as Barack Obama's. Not that Mitt Romney can take much comfort ? they've never elected a challenger they view so negatively, either.

Unless things change dramatically, this Election Day will mark a first, no matter who wins. The victor will be a sitting president with a slow economy, 8 percent-plus unemployment and an average Gallup job-approval rating below 50 percent. Or he'll be a challenger who isn't liked personally by a majority of the public and faces notable discord within his own party.

Polls since the nominating conventions show Obama slowly widening a slight lead nationally and in several key states that could decide a close election. And the mere fact that Romney hasn't ever notched a clear lead in polling, unlike previous winning challengers by this point, underscores his struggle to strike a chord with an electorate that isn't exactly enamored with the incumbent.

The presidency already gives certain campaign advantages to the Oval Office occupant, and history indicates that the longer Romney looks up at Obama, the greater the president's chances at a second term.

History, of course, isn't predictive. But it does provide context to help understand the current state of the race.

Some Republicans point to 1980 as hope for a Romney rebound. That year, Ronald Reagan pulled away from President Jimmy Carter in late October to win in a landslide that has reached almost mythical status in GOP annals. But there are many reasons why this is not 1980, not the least of which are that Romney is not Reagan and Obama is not Carter.

From Labor Day through late October, Carter was tied with or led Reagan. But, unlike Romney, Reagan had led for most of the summer, and Carter hadn't polled better than 41 percent since the spring, well below Obama's lowest head-to-head numbers this year.

Many Republicans, meanwhile, are growing restless following Romney's lackluster convention, his comments on Middle East unrest and the release of a secretly recorded video that showed the GOP nominee dismissing 47 percent of the country as believing they are "victims" and dependent on handouts.

Still, says Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, "This is our election to lose. If Obama wins, he'll be rewriting political history."

Using historical Gallup job approval ratings in election years ? in September where possible ? Obama ranks below the seven presidents who have been re-elected since 1948. But he is in a stronger position than the three ? Carter, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush ? who lost. The three losing presidents all had unemployment rates lower than today's, but the overall economic circumstances vary.

Obama's personal favorability ratings have consistently been higher than his job approval ratings. Republican strategist Timmy Teepell, who manages gubernatorial, House and Senate campaigns for the GOP, credits independents with the difference. "They may not like what he's done," he said, "but they think he's a good guy and he's trying hard."

Voters with negative impressions of Romney, meanwhile, have outnumbered those with favorable impressions for much of his bid. That dynamic was fueled in no small part by a crowded primary field that hammered Romney on everything from his moderate record as Massachusetts governor to his business ventures at Bain Capital.

At Romney headquarters, the official line is optimism. Top pollster Neil Newhouse proffers the Politics 101 method for beating an incumbent. At the same time, he acknowledges that Romney's effort so far isn't enough.

"We recognize that over the next seven weeks we need to not just make the case why Barack Obama doesn't deserve a second term," Newhouse said, "but also to paint a picture of how a Mitt Romney presidency would be different and better."

With Romney working on the second part of that effort, the president has capsized the usual rules of an incumbent election and, in some respects, made Nov. 6 a referendum on Romney in addition to one on Obama's first term.

"We've just done a better job telling the president's story than they've done telling theirs," claims Paul Begala, a veteran Democratic strategist who is advising the pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA Action.

As they did at their convention in Charlotte, N.C., Democrats inside and close to the campaign say the president and his surrogates will continue to frame the last four years as progress, acknowledge that millions of Americans are still struggling and work to convince them that the groundwork for an economic renaissance is in place. At the same time, they will keep criticizing Romney as unable to understand the day-to-day concerns of middle class households.

Romney will keep contending, as he did Monday while campaigning in Pueblo, Colo., that that's exactly backward. Obama loves government and wants higher taxes, Romney says, hurting rather than helping the middle class and keeping American business from creating the new jobs that everyone claims to desire.

And, Romney said, taking a shot at Obama's dealings with foreign troubles, U.S. foreign policy should not be conducted "at the mercy of events" overseas."

Ed Meese, Reagan's 1980 campaign chief of staff who would become attorney general, said recently that his boss ran a thematic campaign "against the welfare state and an accomodationist foreign policy." Reagan held up Carter as an embodiment of larger problems, Meese said, and convinced voters he could solve them.

Begala, who worked for Bill Clinton when the Arkansas governor unseated George H. W. Bush, recalled the buzz phrase of 1992: "It's the economy, stupid." The expression took off after being captured in a picture of a dry-erase board at a Clinton campaign office. "The reason we put that sign up wasn't for voters, it was for staff," Begala said. "That sign actually said, look, this race is about three things: real change vs. more of the same, it's the economy stupid, and don't forget health care.'"

Clinton led Bush from mid-summer through Election Day, regardless of whether independent Ross Perot was included as a choice. Begala said the campaign "knew it was over" the week after Labor Day.

Meese said the Reagan team wasn't confident of victory until the "weekend before the election."

Reagan pulled away after a single debate, held Oct. 27, a week before the election. Carter, Meese said, had "portrayed Reagan as this dangerous gunslinger from the West," successfully pulling Reagan down in the polls. But standing side-by-side with the president for 90 minutes, Reagan shattered that view and surged to a landslide win.

But with Carter pulling 41 percent of the vote, equal to his high heading into the meat of the campaign, the returns proved that the fundamentals of the race had never really changed: A clear majority of the electorate was always poised to fire the incumbent, who spent much of the election year dealing with a weak economy at home and the Iranian hostage crisis overseas.

Four years before Carter lost to Reagan, he won the popular vote over Ford by 2 percentage points, but he led from the start and ran his advantage in opinion polls to as much as 62-29 in the summer.

Even a few losing challengers have managed to seize the leads that have eluded Romney.

Republican Thomas Dewey led for almost the entire race before President Harry Truman pulled his memorable upset in 1948. John Kerry, another Massachusetts nominee, managed a few short-lived but clear leads over George W. Bush in 2004.

Begala said the 2004 race is perhaps the best historical example for Obama. Bush, whose Gallup job approval rating hovered around 50 percent for much of the year, controlled a tight race and was re-elected by the slimmest margin of any winning incumbent in American history.

Meese said Romney could benefit from three October appearances alongside Obama. But he also noted an important distinction: Campaigns weren't as long and as public 32 years ago.

"Ronald Reagan came into the fall much less known than Romney" is now, Meese said.
