"Willie and the Hand Jive" singer Johnny Otis dies at 90 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Johnny Otis, singer of the 1958 hit "Willie and the Hand Jive", has died in California at the age of 90.

Otis died on Tuesday in the Los Angeles suburb of Altadena, his friend and music historian Tom Reed told Reuters.

"His role in pop and rock'n'roll music made him a legend, he could do it all. He is one of the greatest talents of American music and he was a great American," said Reed.

Born John Alexander Veliotes in December 1921 to Greek-American parents in northern California, the young musician grew up in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Berkeley, immersing himself in their culture and music, listening to blues, gospel and swing sounds.

Otis founded his own band in the mid-1940s and scored his first hit with the song "Harlem Nocturne". He went on to have R&B hits with "Mistrustin' Blues" and "Double Crossing Blues" in the 1950s and "Willie and the Hand Jive," in 1958.

The singer also composed Etta James' first hit, "The Wallflower" which gained chart success in 1955, the 1961 hit "Every Beat of My Heart" for Gladys Knight and the Pips, and produced "Hound Dog," made famous by Elvis Presley in 1956.

Otis became a disc jockey for Los Angeles radio station KFOX, and was also heavily involved in politics and the civil rights movement. He wrote about both in his 1968 debut book, "Listen to the Lambs," in which the 1965 Watts riots played a central theme.

He also became an ordained minister, opening the Landmark Community Church in Los Angeles in the late 1970s. He later moved back to northern California to become an organic farmer.

But the pioneering musician never moved away from his first love, music, and toured well into his 70s, headlining blues and jazz festivals along with his son, Shuggie Otis.

Otis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

International monitors slam Kazakhstan election (AP)

ASTANA, Kazakhstan ? International election monitors said Monday that Kazakhstan's parliamentary election failed to meet the fundamental principles of a democratic vote.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said in its assessment of Sunday's election that the vote lacked the conditions needed for genuine competition.

According to preliminary results, President Nursultan Nazarbayev's Nur Otan party won 80.7 percent of the vote. Two other parties ? the business-oriented Ak Zhol, which avoids confrontation with the government, and the People's Communist Party ? got slightly more than 7 percent of the nationwide vote each, clearing the threshold to enter parliament.

That ends the total control of parliament once held by the president's party, but concerns remain that the legislature will still not be a forum for real debate.

"If Kazakhstan is serious about their stated goals of increasing the number of parties in parliament, then the country should have allowed more genuine opposition parties to participate in this election," said Joao Soares, who led the short-term OSCE observer mission.

A more combative Communist party with a higher public profile was suspended by a court for six months in October for violating the law on public organizations, thereby ruling out its participation in the elections. Another party, Alga, which has distinguished itself with its unwavering criticism of the Nazarbayev government, has routinely been denied registration.

Nur Otan has benefited from its association with Nazarbayev and overt state support.

"Official announcements of the elections and advertisements for Kazakhstan's 20th independence anniversary were almost identical to Nur Otan's campaign materials," the OSCE said in its post-vote assessment. "This effectively blurred the distinction between the state and the party."

Positive factors noted by the OSCE were the competent administration of the election and legislation ensuring that at least two parties would enter parliament. Nur Otan had held all the elected seats in the previous 107-member parliament.

However, the monitoring mission said in a statement that the vote counting was not transparent.

"As a result, in many instances, it was not possible for observers to determine whether voters' choices were honestly reflected," it said.

The OSCE also reported its observers detecting at least a dozen cases of ballot-box stuffing

Kazakh authorities have taken pains to convey the impression of a fully competitive and transparent election. Several previously little-known research institutes published exit poll figures Sunday night that very closely tracked the preliminary results later issued by the election commission. It was unclear whether they had collected separate data.

GameStop says videogames holiday sales up slightly (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? GameStop Corp said holiday sales increased slightly as sales of new video game software from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles such as "Call of Duty 3" and "Elder Scrolls V" offset a 20 percent drop in hardware sales.

But GameStop shares fell as much as 5 percent in early trading as some investors were disappointed by the sales numbers, according to analysts.

Sales of traditional video game products such as consoles have been struggling globally as gamers turn to lower-priced online games and spend more time gaming on tablets and phones. GameStop has weathered the trend by focusing on selling used games to console owners.

GameStop said total sales rose slightly to $3.02 billion for the nine-week holiday period to December 31. It said total company same-store sales decreased 0.3 percent -- composed of an increase of 0.3 percent in the United States offset by a decrease of 1.5 percent internationally.

One of the areas of strength for GameStop was digital sales, which increases 60 percent, led by "Call of Duty Elite" subscriptions for downloadable content.

Morningstar analyst Liang Feng said his firm believes GameStop shares are currently "moderately overvalued," but he was surprised by the share sell-off since the margins on hardware sales are much lower than software sales. Other analysts agreed.

"We believe GameStop's holiday comps were slightly ahead of expectations and should be viewed favorably in light of a very promotional holiday period and weaker trends in the hardware category," Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter said in a client note.

Chief executive Paul Raines said in an interview that the company's own data indicated GameStop has managed to win market share from rivals like Best Buy during the holiday period. He said the company was helped by its loyalty reward program. "It meant they were turning left to come to GameStop rather than turning right to go to a big box."

The games retailer lowered its same-store sales forecast for the fourth quarter and full year to be down 1 percent to 2 percent.

U.S. Catholic bishop who resigned fathered two children (Reuters)

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) ? An assistant bishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles in the United States has resigned because he had a secret family, including two teenage children.

The Vatican said on Wednesday that Pope Benedict had accepted the resignation of Gabino Zavala, an auxiliary bishop of the diocese which has been plagued by sexual scandals.

A brief Vatican announcement did not give the reason for Zavala's resignation, saying only that the pope had accepted it under the norm in canon (Church law) that says a bishop who is ill or otherwise unfit to carry out his duties should resign.

But Zavala's direct superior, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez, has prepared a letter for the faithful in the archdiocese explaining the circumstances of the departure of Zavala, who was assistant bishop for the San Gabriel region of California.

In the letter, a draft of which was obtained from a Catholic Church source in Rome, Gomez said Zavala, 60, had informed him in early December that he was the father of two teenage children who live with their mother in another state.

The Catholic Church demands celibacy from its priests.

"Bishop Zavala also told me that he submitted his resignation to the Holy Father in Rome, which was accepted. Since that time, he has not been in ministry and will be living privately," Gomez says in the letter.

"The Archdiocese has reached out to the mother and children to provide spiritual care as well as funding to assist the children with college costs. The family's identity is not known to the public, and I wish to respect their right to privacy," the letter says.

Gomez asked for prayers "for all those impacted by this situation and for each other as we reflect on this letter."

Zavala's resignation under a cloud was the latest headache for the diocese, which paid a $660 million settlement in 2007 for cases of sexual abuse going as far back at the 1940.

Zavala was also the latest Catholic Church official who was found to have had a secret family.

The late leader of the Legionaries of Christ religious order, Father Marcial Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, lived a double life for decades that was not discovered until after his death.

Maciel, a Mexican, was found to have abused seminarians. He was also discovered to have had a mistress with whom he had fathered several children.
