Rovers? football manager Long armed with ?hands-on? advice

FORMER GREAT Britain ace Sean Long has vowed to take a ?hands-on? role at Featherstone Rovers.

Long has been unveiled as Rovers? football manager until the end of the season, working alongside new interim head coach Danny Evans.

Ryan Sheridan, who stepped into the coaching hot seat when Daryl Powell quit the club earlier this year, has left with immediate effect.

He is expected to team-up with Powell again as a member of Castleford Tigers? coaching staff.

Warrington Wolves youth boss John Bastian has already been unveiled as Rovers? head coach from next season.

Long is a three-time Lance Todd Trophy winner, as the Challenge Cup final man of the match.

He played in Super League for St Helens and Hull and had spells on the coaching staff at Salford City Reds and Wigan Warriors after hanging up his boots.

Asked what his new role entails, Long said: ?Lot of hands-on, but also a lot of video footage, how we?re going to break down the defence.

?I know Featherstone have been going really well, but anything I can help with in the last six games of the season and the play-offs then that?s what I?m here to do.?

The former international half-back said that will mean ?tweaking up the moves they?ve already got, making them a little bit better and getting hands-on on training field as well?.

Long feels Rovers are in a good position to win their second Kingston Press Championship Grand Final.

?I am really pleased this opportunity has come up,? he said.

?The previous coaches have done a great job and the players are sitting top of the table (actually second) so it?s a great task in itself.

?Hopefully I can come in and just finish off the job Daryl started. It is great for me.?

Long insists he knows what he?s in for.

?I watch it now and again,? he said of the Championship.

?I watch it on Thursday nights when it?s on Premier Sports and then get to big games where I can.

?I know most of the players anyway as most are ex-Super League players.

?I?ve watched the last three games so know how they play.?

Of the future, he said he is ?just concentrating on this season for the moment?.

But added: ?It?s short-term, but who knows?

?If we win the Plate and the Grand Final, who knows what could happen. I just want to win as many trophies I can with Fev.?
