Outlook The Cougars? two first-year coaches are still getting to know their athletes. ?We hoping to finish at the top of the pack but other than that, we?re still learning,? Root said. ?We have some good depth on the boys side,? Manning pointed out. Among the top competitors for the boys should be Brad Carlson in the shot put, Matt Noonan in the sprints, and Jason Hardacre, Christian Marier and Nayo Ogilvie in the distances. Sprinter/jumper Lindsey Kelley, high jumper Meredith Hu, 600-meter record holder Elise Pitmon and Laurel Cole are among the top athletes for the girls.
Opener: Dec. 18 at UVM.
Nordic skiing
Coach: Eric Barker
Last season: Boys finished second in state meet; girls finished fifth.
Outlook: After a great regular season last winter, the boys lost two of their top four skiers to the flu on the day of states. Now nearly everyone returns. ?They left last season proud of where they had come from, but they?re looking to get back as high as possible,? said Barker, who will send out the likes of Jack Hegman, Trevor Bibb, Nick Shallow and freshman Ben Hegman as a starting four. Wylie Picotte is another talented newcomer. Of the girls team, said Barker, ?They?re looking forward to the first race and seeing how good they can be. If they stack up against the competition, maybe they can have aspirations for making noise in the states.? Hailey Burkhart placed in the top 10 a year ago and Hannah Marshall and Tiana Bibb give MMU quality depth. Newcomer Elise Pitmon brings a strong cross country background.
Opener: Saturday at Sleepy Hollow, 8 a.m.
Wrestling
Coach: Harley Brown
Last season: Placed ninth in state meet.
Outlook: Depth will be the question for the Cougars. Even with the wrestlers MMU has, Brown has the challenge of having several in a few weight classes and none in others, especially at the lower weights. ?I think we?ll be competitive. The key will be spreading the kids out,? Brown said. State finalist Tad Bliss returns, as does Trevor Morrill; he was ranked third at 112 pounds last year but missed the states with health issues. Brandon Giroux, Calvin Ring and Tyler Raymond are veterans capable of competing in various classes. John Sirois, Eliott Emberley, Noah Simons and Michael Pierce will also be counted on to develop.
Opener: Saturday at St. Johnsbury, 10 a.m.
