Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, visited Tai O and Tung Chung today (February 15) to see the revitalisation works in Tai O and the latest developments of Tung Chung.

Mr Chan visited the Tai O Heritage Hotel in the morning. The hotel was formerly the Tai O Police Station, which was converted into a heritage hotel under Batch I of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme of the Development Bureau. It is situated on a small hill next to the Tai O ferry pier.

The original features of the police station such as cannons, searchlights, guard towers and bunkers are adequately preserved. The hotel displays the classic architectural features of the late 19th century.

Mr Chan then visited the Tai O Rural Committee Historic & Cultural Showroom. The showroom is managed by the Tai O Rural Committee and the items on display were donated by residents of Tai O.

They include fishing equipment, everyday utensils and dismantled antique building structures. The Chairman of the Tai O Rural Committee, Mr Lee Chi-fung, gave Mr Chan an introduction to the relics and the cultural characteristics of Tai O.

Mr Chan visited Tung Chung in the afternoon and visited a four-member family in Yat Tung Estate. He chatted with the retired tenant and his family, and asked about their daily life, needs and concerns.

Mr Chan wished the family the best of luck and good health.

Mr Chan visited two sites in Tung Chung and received a briefing from the District Planning Officer/Sai Kung and Islands, Mr Chung Man-kit, on the latest developments and future planning in the district, including the proposed public housing development in Tung Chung Area 39 and the residential development near the promenade.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Chan met with the Chairman of the Islands District Council, Mr Chow Yuk-tong, and 14 council members to listen to their views on the development of Islands District and other issues.
