"They?ve run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division are all they?ve got left," said Ryan to more cheers.

One line that really had GOP partisans slapping their thighs in delight was where Ryan blasted the President over continuing economic problems, making the argument to young people that they should think about voting Republican in 2012.

"College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life," Ryan said to cheers, as Twitter lit up with the hashtag of #FadingObamaPosters almost immediately.

Ryan started off by introducing his family to delegates - and more importantly - to the nation, and the kids didn't disappoint, drawing smiles as they waved to the assembled crowd.

At one point, Ryan even joked about the generational difference between himself and Romney, boiling it down to what was on their Ipods.

"I hope it?s not a deal-breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC, and ends with Zeppelin," Ryan said about what music he wanted to play at his campaign events.?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Benzene occurs infrequently in California public supply wells and comes predominantly from naturally occurring petroleum deposits deep in the ground, according to a study by the U.S. Geological Survey. Spills associated with underground fuel storage and above ground distribution systems have long been considered the main source of benzene in groundwater. This unique study finds that contamination most often occurs in older, brackish, groundwater located near naturally occurring deep underground oil and gas deposits.

As part of a statewide studyassessing groundwater quality, scientists analyzed untreated groundwater from wells, not treated tap water. Groundwater used for public supply is typically treated by water providers to ensure compliance with water quality standards.

"This study illustrates the value of letting scientific facts speak for themselves when dealing with critical issues such as the frequency and potential sources of groundwater contamination," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "Mitigation for contamination can be costly, especially if the source is not properly identified, confirming the importance of putting science first."

Benzene is an organic chemical compound. The liquid is derived from petroleum and is used to make motor fuels, insecticides, and other chemical products. California is an important location for this study because it has a high fuel use rate, a high density of fuel storage facilities, abundant natural underground petroleum sources, and large urban populations dependent on groundwater. Because many regions worldwide have similar characteristics, the finding that natural, underground sources of hydrocarbons play an important role in benzene occurrence in groundwater provides new insight for resource managers globally.

According to the study, benzene was found in 1.7 percent of untreated public supply wells, and generally occurred in concentrations below the maximum contaminant level health standard. When detected, nearly half (45 percent) of benzene detections were related to geogenic or natural sources, compared to 27 percent attributed to human activity. The remaining 28 percent of the detections may be either geogenic or anthropogenic, or a mixture of the two. Similar relationships were found for the group of 17 other hydrocarbons analyzed in the study. Data from 14,390 wells sampled throughout California by the California State Water Resources Control Board's Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program and the California Department of Public Healthwere evaluated.

"This study indicates that naturally occurring, deep hydrocarbons can affect the quality of groundwater used for drinking supply," said Ken Belitz, lead scientist for the GAMA Program's Priority Basin Project.

"This research improves our understanding of why and where hydrocarbons occur in groundwater. In general, the unexpected results indicate that hydrocarbons are detected most often in deep aquifers near naturally occurring subsurface petroleum reservoirs, less often in shallow layers subject to fuel spills and leaks on the land surface, and least frequently in the middle layers of aquifer systems. Natural seepage or petroleum-extraction by people could contribute to hydrocarbons reaching aquifer layers used for public supply; this study did not assess the pathway by which natural hydrocarbons reach aquifers," said Matt Landon, a USGS hydrologist and lead author of the study.

The study, funded by the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development and conducted in cooperation with the GAMA Program's Priority Basin Project, synthesizes statewide data to focus on factors explaining hydrocarbon in aquifers used for public supply in California. The USGS California Water Science Center is the technical lead for the GAMA Program and is monitoring and assessing water quality in 120 priority groundwater basins, and groundwater outside of basins, across California over a ten-year period.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested on Wednesday on drug and gun possession charges, celebrity website TMZ.com reported, days before he was headed to prison for tax evasion.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was arrested during a traffic stop during which police found prescription pills, marijuana, a gun and cash in his car, TMZ.com said.

Sigel, 38, best known for his collaborations with rapper Jay-Z and R&B artist R. Kelly, was sentenced to prison last month after owing more than $728,000 in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, Philadelphia's local Fox affiliate said.

A judge ordered Sigel to pay all taxes, penalties and interest, which officials said he failed to do. The rapper was due to report to prison on September 12.

Representatives for Sigel and the Philadelphia police could not be reached for comment.

"The stress hormone system may be less mature in babies who were born after a shorter pregnancy, which could have negative consequences," assistant professor Marion Tegethoff, of the Faculty for Psychology at the University of Basel, said. Since cortisol can inhibit the immune system, the lack of cortisol-level rises could lead to excess immunological responses, similarly to what occurs with allergies.

Real estate marketing online and driving traffic does not require you to be a technical nerd. As a matter of fact, you are about to see how easy it really is.

The Real Estate industry may have taken it on the chin lately, but it does not mean you should quit. What you should be doing is focusing your marketing where it counts, online.

One common belief is that online marketing with any business is far too complicated to learn. Many actually go as far as to believe you will need education in coding, PHP and learning how algorithms work. This is not true at all, as a matter of fact, you need not be a ?techie nerd? at all.

Of course a little search engine optimization or search marketing knowledge is good to learn, but even this is simple, so simple in fact that anyone can master it in just a few hours or days. Now on to some ideas for you real estate agents and brokers.

If you are not blogging, making videos and connecting your content to your social media profiles, you are missing out on the fundamentals that can truly boost not only your leads, but your sales as well.

There are only a few simple platforms and tools (other than Craigslist) you need to master, and a few strategies as well. Here are a few platforms you will most definitely need to know:

1. Basic Understanding of SEM (search engine marketing)
2. Knowing and applying good keyword research and usage.
3. Creating a simple blog.
4. Content creation (blogging).
5. Video marketing
6. Social media marketing (Google plus, Facebook and Twitter pages) This will also include local sites like Craigslist and the like.
7. Sales funnel creation.
8. And, last but not least, E-mail marketing (building, managing and converting your list).

While this may seem like a lot of learning and work, know this, it took me less than an hour to create this article/post. Excuses will be just that for not applying what you need to apply, excuses.

Having friends in the Real Estate business, it has been a pleasure helping them to dominate their local search engines through some very simple strategies, using these simple platforms.

Creating a presence online is as simple as WordPress. This simple and easy to use content management system is perfect for creating what the search engines are looking for today, information. Think about it like this; if Google, Yahoo and Bing are looking for information, should you not be in the business of creating it?

Blogging allow for the perfect compliment of what these search engines are looking for, your information. So, start creating already.

Once the basics are understood above, the one major question you will most likely have is ?what? kind of information should you create? Should you be a salesman and list every home for sale you have? or, should you do less selling and be more information driven? Remember the last couple paragraphs? Then the answer is information.

Taking a look at what interests people in your community, the reason they moved to your town or city in the first place, remembering that and creating content around that is the perfect place to start.

You like me, probably live in a nice community. You like me enjoy what your city or town has to offer it?s members. Like Ashland, Oregon where I am from. Here we have the world famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival. What a wonderful addition to my blog! Talking about my community and it?s happenings is a great way to get traffic to your site that may not have been interested otherwise.

?Well Dave, this is not about selling tickets to a play, I want to sell homes!? Understood. But today things are quiet different in the advertising industry. Today people have access to much more information, and in an instant. What if someone was looking at a town near Ashland, but just so happened to be looking at the outlying area, and what if they noticed your post and, your ?call to action? on the sidebar?

In today?s marketplace, the real estate agent should be creating solid content, solid information. Media rich content like blogposts, videos and even snapshots shared on your social media profiles, not just links.

Real estate marketing online should not be dependent upon your local MLS and some crazy little magazine of a thing at the local minute market, it should be about you being a part of and sharing your community online. And you don?t have to be a techie nerd to do it.

Study explores injury risk in military Humvee crashes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new report by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy examines the risk factors for injuries to U.S. military personnel from crashes involving highly mobile multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWVs), more commonly known as Humvees. According to the study, involvement in combat and serving as the vehicle's operator or gunner posed the greatest risk for injury. It is the first published analysis of factors associated with Humvee injury risk in a deployed setting, and is in the August issue of the journal Military Medicine.

According to the U.S. Department of Army, motor vehicle crashes -- both privately owned and military vehicles -- account for nearly one-third of all U.S. military fatalities annually and are among the top five causes of hospitalization for personnel.

"Nearly half of all those involved in motor vehicle crashes in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan from 2002-2006 were in Humvees at the time of the crash," said principal investigator Keshia Pollack, PhD, an associate professor with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "It's critical that we consider risk factors for these crashes, and use this knowledge to develop injury prevention programs and policies," she said. For example, given the association between being in a combat setting (versus crashes that do not occur during combat situations and injury), training for the military in combat-like situations through simulation or live-training exercises for all drivers could be important. Similarly, as gunners are often in an exposed position on top of the vehicle, equipment or devices that protect them from injury in rollover crashes should be explored.

The authors, who included researchers from the U.S. Army as well as the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, used data on U.S. Army vehicle crashes from 1999 to 2006 collected by the Army Safety Management Information System. The total documented cases of crashes was narrowed to focus on the sub-population of active duty U.S. Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard soldiers involved in military vehicle crashes in the countries of Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, occurring during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

"The finding that the odds of being injured when the crash occurred in combat indicates that in a high-stress situation, the soldier may be distracted or less likely to take self-protective measures or follow safety regulations," said study co-author Susan P. Baker, MPH, a professor with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy. "As motor vehicle crashes are responsible for one-third of all U.S. military deaths annually, it's imperative that significant measures be taken to save lives."

The research was funded by grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and the Defense Safety Oversight Council through Concurrent Technologies Corporation. Dr. (CPT) Samuel Peik, an army physician who completed his MPH with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy in 2010, is first author on the paper, "Injuries to Deployed U.S. Army Soldiers Involved in HMMWV Crashes, 2002-2006." Additional authors are Michelle Canham-Chervak, PhD, MPH, and Keith Hauret, MSPH, MPT.

On TV, a quiet exit for first man on the moon

NEW YORK (AP) ? By the yardstick of history, Neil Armstrong was among the most accomplished men ever to walk on the planet that he looked upon from afar one magical week in July 1969.

Television news didn't seem to fully recognize the importance of the first human to walk on the moon on the weekend he died.

In the hours after Armstrong's death was announced, news networks were airing canned programming ? jailhouse documentaries, a rerun interview with Rielle Hunter, Mike Huckabee's weekend show. Menacing satellite pictures of Tropical Storm Isaac had much more air time than Armstrong's dusty hops on the lunar surface. Talk of the upcoming GOP national convention sucked up the air.

A trio of factors played in to the lack of attention.

First, Armstrong died in Cincinnati on a Saturday. Not just any Saturday, when news organizations have a skeletal staff, but a late August weekend. Half the country is at the beach. It's not a stretch to think inexperience on duty might have played a role in NBC News' embarrassing gaffe: a website headline that read: "Astronaut Neil Young, first man to walk on the moon, dies at age 82." (NBC called it a staffer error and said the mistake was taken down after seven minutes.)

His death came as somewhat of a surprise, too. Everyone dies, of course, and most news organizations have prepared material on hand to mark the passing of famous people. In many cases, though, there is advance word that someone is very ill, giving the media a chance to prepare and plan.

Armstrong's determined effort to live a quiet, private life after his astronaut days also left TV at a disadvantage. There was relatively little tape on hand to roll from interviews reminiscing about his experiences, reunions with old astronauts or public appearances. No Armstrong chats with David Letterman. No appearances in music videos. There was the moon walk, and not much else.

Notable deaths often give viewers the chance to reflect, to put into perspective lives of great accomplishment or great notoriety.

Not so with Neil Armstrong. His death was like his life: strangely muted given the magnitude of his achievements.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The few hundred protesters gathered under wet skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump even heavier rains on Tampa won't stop them from trying to get out their message that America's middle class is in trouble and needs to be restored.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" were melting on a warm, sticky, rainy day. Occupy protesters it represents the melting away of the middle class.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies, owned by Bain Capital, in the city of some 25,000 people. They say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy protesters are often made up of younger people who generally believe the financial system is stacked against the majority. But in Tampa, many older people joined the marchers.

They included Gaurapp and Landecker, who said that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

For months, protesters were gearing up for scores of people to converge on Tampa the day before the convention began to showcase their laundry list of beefs and key messages. The groups included organized labor and Occupy Wall Street.

Neither protesters nor the GOP, however, could foresee Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with winds, rain and maybe some flooding on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

Demonstrations stayed small. In fact, one against the Republican kickoff party in nearby St. Petersburg seemed to include more police than the 100 or so protesters.

Though jobs and uneven distribution of wealth were strong messages, marchers didn't seem to have a universal message.

Some came to oppose just Mitt Romney, who officially will become the Republican nominee for president on Thursday. Others didn't seem to care for Romney or President Barack Obama.

About 30 people, many with dogs, held a rally against Romney, who infamously strapped his dog in a crate to the top of his car on a family vacation years ago.

"If somebody is going to treat their animal inhumanely, how are they going to treat our country?" said Kim Swygert, 37, a law student from Tampa, who came with her Great Dane.

"He strapped his dog to the top of the car because he crapped, excuse my French," she said.

Several carried anti-Romney signs including one that read, "Don't roof rack me, bro."

The weather didn't deter 52 year-old Donald Butner. He says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

Many protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America.

The 54-year-old Landecker spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

At least one arrest was made. A man that police said had a machete strapped to his leg was subdued after he resisted officers, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Notre Dame suspends starting RB Cierre Wood

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Notre Dame suspended starting tailback Cierre Wood two games for violating team rules, leaving the Fighting Irish without their 1,000-yard rusher against Navy and Purdue.

Wood led the Irish in rushing last year with 1,102 yards and scored nine rushing touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Wood, a senior, played in all 13 games in 2011 with nine starts. Theo Riddick and George Atkinson III will likely be the Irish's top two ball carriers now that Wood is out.

Coach Brian Kelly also announced Sunday that junior defensive end Justin Utupo was suspended for the games against Navy in Dublin, Ireland on Sept. 1 and the home opener the following Saturday against Purdue.

"Our players are aware of the standards I set for our program and that failure to meet my expectations will result in consequences," Kelly said in a release. "Justin and Cierre violated our team rules so I've suspended them for the first two games of the season."

Utupo played in 12 games in 2011, primarily on special teams, and was a reserve defensive end on the most recent Notre Dame depth chart.

Earlier, Kelly suspended quarterback Tommy Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese for the season opener for their roles in a skirmish with police following an off-campus party in May.

The Irish have also lost starting cornerback Lo Wood for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. He underwent surgery on Wednesday.

We've already heard rumors of a forthcoming 'superphone' from LG, and indeed the Korean OEM has recently started their own teaser campaign to carry it a little further. The so-called Optimus G is set to be a Snapdragon S4 Pro toting, 2GB of RAM housing behemoth, and the folks at AndroidMX claim to have got their hands on it. 

The LG E973 as described by its label, is a 4.7-inch device with a 1280x720 IPS display, the Adreno 320 GPU, Android 4.0.4 and yes, that 2GB of RAM and the mighty quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro. Having had the chance to play with it, the androidmx guys simply say that it "really flies." We can only imagine. It is worth noting that what we see here apparently isn't final hardware or software, so there is still a possibility LG will change it up some before release -- Jelly Bean, maybe? 

The speculation is that we will see the Optimus G unveiled officially at next weeks IFA show in Berlin, Germany. We're not so sure, however. While LG will be present at the show, they have previously informed us that they will not be showcasing any new smartphones in Berlin. Given the prototype nature of what we see here, we're likely to have to wait a little longer.

New Syria mediator tells U.N. chief he is "scared"

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday that he was "honored, flattered, humbled and scared" at the prospect of leading international efforts to broker peace in Syria's worsening 17-month conflict.

Brahimi met with Ban for the first time since agreeing last week to replace Kofi Annan at the end of August as the United Nations and Arab League joint special representative on Syria.

"Secretary-General, when you called me I told you that I was honored, flattered, humbled and scared and I am still in that frame of mind," Brahimi told Ban, when the pair met in New York.

"The Syrian people, they will be our first masters. We will consider their interests above and before anyone else. We will try to help as much as we can, we will not spare any effort," he said. "Let's try and see what we can do."

Brahimi, who hesitated for days before accepting the job that France's U.N. envoy Gerard Araud called an "impossible mission," was meeting with various U.N. officials on Friday to discuss plans for a fresh approach to the Syria conflict, which the United Nations says has killed over 18,000 people.

"The longer this fighting goes on, the more people will be killed, the more people will suffer," Ban said on Friday.

"Your (Brahimi's) leadership will be very important, you have the full respect and full support of international community. It is crucially important the Security Council, the whole United Nations system (is) supporting your role," he said.

Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is stepping down after six months as the international Syria envoy because he said his peace plan was hampered by a divided U.N. Security Council.

Annan was especially frustrated by the deadlock between the five permanent council members.

Russia, backed by China, repeatedly vetoed Western- and Arab-backed resolutions that criticized the Syrian government and threatened it with sanctions, saying the United States, Europe and Gulf Arabs were seeking regime change.

The Western powers have accused Russia, Syria's top arms supplier and staunch ally, of propping up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government. They have also accused Syria's ally Iran of providing military aid to Assad.

Brahimi told Reuters in an interview on Saturday that while in New York he wanted to urgently clarify what support the United Nations can offer him to ensure his mission has a better chance of success.
